Nashville Predators News: Brian McGrattan to Milwaukee For Conditioning Stint

Saturday, February 16, 2013

137193848

Since he hasn't played since the first two games of the season, Brian McGrattan is being dispatched to Milwaukee for a conditioning assignment, AKA "speed bag work". Seriously, I doubt he'll do much fighting there, as he has nothing to gain and much to lose should he get injured. The thing you really watch out for is a guy on the other team trying to make a name for himself by taking on a feared NHL heavyweight.

This came from the Preds:

Nashville Predators President of Hockey Operations/General Manager David Poile announced today that the club has assigned forward Brian McGrattan to Milwaukee (AHL) on a two-week conditioning assignment. McGrattan remains on Nashville's active roster during the conditioning stint.

McGrattan, 31 (9/2/81), has appeared in two games for the Predators in 2012-13. A season ago, he was claimed on waivers from Anaheim on Oct. 11, 2011 and played 30 games, notched two assists and recording 61 penalty minutes.

Phoenix Coyotes @ Nashville Predators: Playoff Rematch

Will the Nashville Predators look for revenge tonight for the way Phoenix eliminated them in the Western Conference Semifinals last spring?

Phoenix Coyotes

The Coyotes come into tonight's game a little bit greedy, hoping to complete a sweep of their 3-game road trip. After having gotten off to a very slow start, they've found their legs lately, and have gone 5-1-2 in their last eight games. According to our SB Nation brethren it sounds like a back-to-basics approach is what turned things around:

...it's about scoring chances, not shots on goal. The Coyotes outshot the Stars 40 to 26 in the season opener and lost that game. The bigger concern is when this team doesn't play the style of hockey that Dave Tippet expects. That's what they were doing to start this season and it wasn't working. They have won four of their last five by getting back to playing the style of hockey that took them to the playoffs in each of the last three years.

- Five For Howling

The guy to watch out for tonight is their leading scorer Radim Vrbata, whose 11 points in 13 games pace the club. Steve Sullivan's return to Nashville is also a major story to follow (will he be recognized on the scoreboard) as would Matthew Lombardi's, but Lombardi is out of the lineup indefinitely with an upper body injury, as he was for almost his entire 2010-2011 season with Nashville.

Nashville Predators

For the Predators, we have a classic glass half-empty or half-full situation. While the offensive side of their game has been downright dreadful, the defense and goaltending have been been excellent. The saving grace has been Pekka Rinne, who has been off to a much better start than his 5-3-3 record would indicate (another example of why you should just laugh in the face of anyone pulling out Wins as an important goalie stat). Against Phoenix, Peks has an all-time record of 8-6-1, with a .926 save percentage, 2.18 GAA, and 4(!) shutouts.

In terms of tonight's lineup, the major question is whether Hal Gill will get back in there after being scratched Tuesday against San Jose. The defensive and penalty killing effort were outstanding in that game, which could impact his chances. As Barry Trotz said after that game, however, that decision wasn't an indictment of Gill's play - all the defensemen have been playing relatively well, and it was more about getting back to using a full assortment of 12 forwards.

Stay tuned for game-day updates, and look for the Game Thread to go live shortly before tonight's 7:00 p.m. puck drop...

Nashville Predators 3, Phoenix Coyotes 0: Pekka Rinne Does It Again

20130214_gav_sq9_142

Much like Tuesday night against San Jose, this was a game in which you wondered if anyone was going to score [INSERT YOUR OWN VALENTINE'S DAY JOKE HERE]. Finally, early in the 3rd period, Gabriel Bourque's speed caused Michael Boedker to take a Hooking call, putting the Preds on the power play. Fittingly, it was Bourque who got the goal, tipping Martin Erat's shot with his skate to the far side of Mike Smith, who had an outstanding game in the Phoenix net. SB Nation highlighted a clip from the end of the 2nd period, when he barely kept Nashville off the board.

Pekka Rinne wasn't so shabby himself, of course. Tonight's win pushes him to 6-1-0 in his last seven, and after making 19 saves tonight, his save percentage is now .938 and he has 3 shutouts in 12 games.

Nick Spaling added some insurance with a nice shot midway through the 3rd, slipping a wrister just underneath the crossbar and over Smith's shoulder. Fisher's score with 1:44 was like a breath of fresh air, he one-timed a pass from below the goal line and seemed to have the world lift off his shoulders at the same time.

Nashville is now 7-3-4, good for 18 points and 4th place in the Western Conference.

Random Observations

  • Boy the Preds stunk on the faceoff dot tonight, going 16-for-46. Those happen sometimes, though.
  • Steve Sullivan had some good chances, and was recognized with a nice video tribute in the 1st period, showing his 2009 Masterton Trophy acceptance speech. Chants of "Sully! Sully! Sully!" were heard in Bridgestone after that one.
  • Despite the lack of goals early, the Predators had more offensive chances in this game than they have for a while, they just couldn't finish.

Nashville Predators 1, San Jose Sharks 0: Colin Wilson Ends the Drought

Wednesday, February 13, 2013

20130212_jla_sq9_635

This game went scoreless through regulation, but had a number of twists and turns along the way. The first period saw the Sharks dominate play, while in the second the Predators gained momentum by killing off a slew of penalties. The third saw Nashville take greater command and get into the offensive end, but they couldn't connect on their best opportunities.

After dodging a deadly scoring chance for the Sharks early in OT, Ryan Ellis led the play into the offensive end and laid a soft wrister towards the net, where Colin Wilson tipped it by Antti Niemi for his 4th goal of the season, ending the Preds' two-game losing streak. Pekka Rinne was spectacular earning his 2nd shutout of the season, and was named the game's 1st Star (Willy was 2nd, Niemi 3rd).

The Preds host the Phoenix Coyotes in a playoff rematch on Thursday. Find the best deals on tickets at TiqIQ!

Random Observations

  • Early on, the Preds had absolutely no jump. It was well over 5 minutes in before Roman Josi stepped up, getting off a good shot from the point, and following that up with a drive to the net which created a great chance for Colin Wilson, who roofed the shot. That kind of initiative is sorely lacking among the forwards these days.
  • Officially the Predators ended up with 3 shots on goal in that first period, a pretty disheartening display by a team which is supposed to be focusing on creating more offense. A few boos were heard as the team skated off.
  • Since when does the Marty Party take place in the penalty box? His 8 PIMs tonight tie a career high, set January 17 2008 against Anaheim.
  • Give full marks to the Nashville penalty killers, even without Hal Gill they fought through several difficult stretches (including 41 seconds of 5-on-3) while yielding very little in terms of scoring chances to San Jose.
  • This was the Preds' 18th consecutive sellout... it seems so long ago that a Tuesday night meant a crowd of 10,000.
  • The biggest roar from the crowd may have come late in the 3rd period, when a fight broke out in the lower reaches of Section 113. There wasn't anything happening on the ice, but Amanda DiPaolo helpfully pointed it out to me.
  • Paul Gaustad had another big night on the faceoffs, winning 16 of 21.
  • Pekka Rinne, Pekka Rinne, Pekka Rinne. It's no wonder that he got an A on his report card.

Despite their recent stretch of poor results, the Sharks remain a strong team across the board. With the Predators, it's a familiar song. Very, very few shots on goal are being taken, but defense & goaltending are keeping them competitive.

San Jose Sharks

The Sharks have ridden a rough road since the Predators hung the first loss of the season on them back on February 2nd. Including that night, San Jose is 0-3-2 in their last five, deflating all the early-season buzz that had them among the Stanley Cup-contending elite.

It's the offense which has dried up for the Sharks, as they scored at least 4 goals in their first five games, but haven't done it since. Joe Thornton and Patrick Marleau, who lit up the scoreboard in the early going, have combined for just one goal and one assist in the last 6 games.

The guy to watch out for tonight? Martin Havlat, who has 15 goals and 23 assists in 32 career games against the Preds, including a goal in that February 2nd contest.

The official Game Notes for tonight bring us further information on Havlat, too: he "thoroughly enjoyed Maroon 5's song "Payphone" when it came out this summer."

These FinFacts are pretty incredible, actually, here are more:

  • Antti Niemi "Believes he looks like Matt Damon."
  • Jason Demers is an "ardent supporter of the San Jose Earthquakes (MLS) and once had a penalty kicking competition with their goaltender Jon Busch in which each took turns attempting to score on one another." I'm just going to assume that's code for something.
  • Joe Pavelski "grows a red beard even though he has brown hair".
  • Patrick Marleau? "His favorite Avenger is Iron Man, but he does not own an Iron Man suit. He also has an immense respect for The Hulk"
  • James Sheppard "grows a really bad mustache". So do I, pal.
  • Dan Boyle is "a proud member of Team Coco, he is an ardent supporter of the Conan O’Brien Show and dreams to one day be a guest".
  • Ryan Clowe: "His grandfather drove a semi-truck for a living that had a manual transmission. His grandfather only had one arm."
  • Adam Burish "appeared on an episode of The Jerry Springer Show, serving as security".
  • Logan Couture "dreams of being able to rap like Drake".
  • Justin Braun "is in no way related to Scooter Braun, who is Justin Bieber’s manager".
  • Brent Burns "envisions himself as a character in the Game of Thrones series". Again, so do I, pal.

Nashville Predators

Tonight it's the Preds who are the rested team, having had yesterday off while the Sharks were getting beaten in Columbus, 6-2.

Until Patric Hornqvist returns from his knee injury, Barry Trotz doesn't have many options to get the offense rolling. Can he cobble together a line which gets Craig Smith rolling? Do you load up one line and try to get a goal or two out of them, while spending the rest of the time hunkering down on defense?

What will bear watching will be whether or not Trotz sticks with the 7-man defensive unit he's been running with for several games now. Defeat makes for a convenient time to shake things up, so perhaps we'll see Matt Halischuk get back in there.

Of course, with all this talk of dire times in the offensive zone, tonight we'll probably see some 7-5 barnburner just to amuse the hockey gods.

Make sure to check back later for further game-day updates, and we'll have the Game Thread warmed up & ready for tonight's 7:00 p.m. faceoff...

Nashville Predators vs San Jose Sharks: The Fight in Section 114

9x7ltv1

Last night, I was happily (sorta) watching the Preds on Center Ice and hanging out in the GDT. It was the third period, things were starting to pick up a little bit, and I was feeling a bit better about our chances, when suddenly the fans started booing. This irked me a little bit, as I was under the immediate impression that they were booing the Preds despite the fact that they had gotten their act together (and held it together relatively well) after the first period. A few other GDT participants noted the fans' change in tone as well, but no one was really sure what was going on until someone made the announcement:

"There's a fight in the stands. Section 114." (Thanks to DonBorvio for keeping an eye on Twitter during the GDT!)

After the game, I went on a Twitter expedition to see what records I could find of the fight. Some are more extensive than others, but no report was as thorough as Chris Burton's. His paragraph is at the very end.

Disclaimer: We recognize that these were the actions of one individual, and that they do not reflect the character of the entire San Jose Sharks fan-base.

Editor's Note: We don't normally devote space to events like this, but they are exceedingly rare at Preds games, and I think it was worth sharing with those who only caught fragments of the story. - Dirk

The Fight Starts

@PollakOnSharks: Ugly, ugly fight breaking out in stands here. #SJSharks jersey on at least one of the combatants. Ridiculous.

@Cellblock303: A #SJSharks fan in 114 just went after a #Preds fan. A true fight ensued. #NHL

@puckscenedotcom: We have a brawl between a Sharks fan and several Pekka Rinne shirts in Snowbird’s Ice Box. #preds #sjsharks

@justinbbradford: MAJOR fan fight between 113 & 114!!!!!

@ThePredatorial: A female Sharks fan just got booted from section 104. Not sure why.

@ThePredatorial: Huge fight in section 104. Oh boy.

The Fight Goes Down

@justinbbradford: Wow. Dude went flying! Insane.

@Bucklette117: Sharks fan flies backward downstairs toward ice. Sharks players start noticing and watching. Security comes out of no where

@ebee228 (Jon Blum's fiancee): @justinbbradford right next to us! Crazy Sharks fan

@ebee228: @nickmcduffie he was heckling a preds fan, then said "you wanna go?" And went up to the preds fan and ended up tumbling down the steps

@ThePredatorial: It's not good, either. Sharks fan goes flying down the stairs, #Preds fans jump on. (Section 114, my mistake).

@ThePredatorial: Some serious blows were landed. Holy cow

@chaseallister: Did everyone see the Sharks fan whiff on the haymaker and then do approximately eight backflips down the stairs? Best.

@chaseallister: Preds fans are the best fans. Dude Matrixed the hell out of the Sharks fan haymaker then tossed him down a whole section.

@BigBenPreds: Looks like medics being called

@Krazykylepreds: No matter how drunk you are, never fight on stairs. Never.

@ThePredatorial: So far, 3 stars of the game: Rinne, Niemie, Preds fighter in 114

Video of the Fight:

I was also able to find a video of the fight. It's literally 3 seconds long, but you take what you can get:

The Entire Tale, by Chris Burton

The fight reporter of the evening, online at least, was Chris Burton (@predatweeter), who sent out about 20 tweets describing the whole event, the discussion he had with an involved fan and his girlfriend, and answers to questions from his followers. I've taken the successive tweets and shoved them all into one big paragraph to make them easier to read.

Was in the section over from the fight in the stands, saw it all. Really brutal. And sad. Sharks fan yells obscenities/flies bird at her whole section – she’s ejected. Fans cheer, her boyfriend gets angry, starts same thing. Boyfriend asks Preds fan six rows away to fight – he comes down stairs, they go tumbling down several rows, throwing punches. Sharks fan rails on Preds guy till everyone else in the section goes to break it up. Sharks fan gets tangled in his own shirt, takes beating. Bunch of guys in Preds gear jumped on him till it was diffused. Definitely blood, arrests. Ugly. Booze clearly involved. Don’t condone Preds fans actions, but largely self defense/helping. Hated to see it. From what I saw, most Preds fans attempted to break it up. Sharks fan kept throwing punches/yelling after being detained. Finally, multiple people escorted out of the stands. Too bad, missed a good ending – thanks to @TheViewfrom111 for the great seats.

Wow. At the bar, talking to Preds fan who helped restrain Sharks fan. Said he got him restrained from behind, but then (more) Sharks fan whirls around, hits him in the face, and pushes Preds fan’s girlfriend down stairs. Preds fan bloodied, given new (free) shirt. This guy’s girlfriend is saying Sharks fan was screaming incredibly misogynistic insults at women in section. She hit him. To clarify: Preds fan’s girlfriend hit after being hit, or so she’s telling me.

Will point this out for those who don't go to Preds games - I've been going since 2007 and [have] never seen a single fight.

Concussions in the NHL: The Tale of Jason Arnott, Alexander Radulov, and Exuberant Celebrations

Gyi0060258257

In 2008, the Predators had finished the regular season with 91 points (41-32-9) and had snagged the 8th seed in the playoffs. It was a great year for Jason Arnott, who finished the regular season with 72 points - a mere four points below his career high. The Predators were up against the first seeded Detroit Red Wings, and had not been fairing extremely well. Down 2-0 in the series, the Preds came back to Nashville for the next set of games. During Game 3, the Predators scored two goals in nine seconds. This ended up being the second of three times in this series that the Predators scored two consecutive goals within less than a minute of each other (Game 2: 2G/11 sec.; Game 3: 2G, 9 sec.; Game 4: 2G, 32 sec.). I actually didn't know that before writing this article, so that was a pretty cool fact to stumble across. Hold on to that one; I'm sure it'll come in handy some day.

Let's take a look at those 9 seconds, shall we?

Nashville Scores 2 Goals in 9 Seconds (via nomoboys)

After an eventful first two periods (two goals for each team, 5 PKs, 3 PPs) and a quick Detroit goal to start off the third period (40 seconds in), the Predators finally came roaring back to finish off the game. Ryan Suter, who was just 23 at the time, struck first - his second career playoff point - with a slap shot from the left point. The game was tied at 3-3. The team celebrated, and the Bridge Sommet went crazy. Everyone lined up again, and before the commentators could even finish discussing Suter's goal, Arnott ripped another slap shot past Dominik Hasek from the right face-off dot.

Guess who was really excited about that?

Alexander Radulov.

He's an excitable dude.

Here he comes...

Radulov_comes_in_medium

Arnott crouches, preparing himself for the hug...

In_for_the_kill_medium

HUG!!!!

The_hug_medium

What happened next, no one could have predicted.

Despite Arnott preparing himself for Radulov's leaping hug, the momentum caused him to lose his balance and fall backwards... into the dasher.

The_hit_medium

Because someone took this video with a potato, it's almost impossible to see where Arnott's head lands from just a screen cap, so I included an arrow. What's labeled above is the back of Arnott's head smashing against the dasher board, while Radulov cheers enthusiastically above him.

Arnott_down_medium

...Clearly this did not end well. Arnott laid on the ice for a few seconds before being helped to his feet by his teammates. He skated slowly onto the bench, and talked with the trainer.

What happened next?

Believe it or not, Arnott actually came back for the next game (#4), and had a solid 18 minutes (17:56) of playing time. He took one shot, blocked one shot, had one hit, and was +1. He also took a puck to the head during that game. After the game, the Predators flew out to Detroit. Following the morning skate before that night's game, Arnott began to feel "ill" and was scratched from the remaining games. Concussion awareness/interest wasn't exactly at its peak in 2008, so not much information was released about the details of Arnott's injury, though possibly because not many people seemed to ask for any.

What happened to the Predators?

The 2007-2008 season was a strong one for Arnott. He finished the regular season with 72 points in 79 games (0.91 P/G-%age) and was second on the Predators in scoring behind JP Dumont. He had one point his four playoff games that year, but with extensive playoff experience (100 GP) and a career playoff point percentage of 0.64, he was an invaluable asset to the still relatively young Preds.

The series was tied 2-2 when Arnott fell out of the lineup, and the Red Wings went on to win the next two games. Across the first four games of the series (while Arnott was still playing), the Predators scored 11 goals, and the Red Wings scored 12 goals. In the final two games (in which Arnott did not play), the Preds only scored 1 goal, while the Red Wings scored 5. It's debatable as to how much of change that can be attributed purely to Arnott's presence/absence, but as the captain of the team and as one of the most experienced players on the team, it almost certainly played a large role.

What happened to Arnott?

Arnott came back for the 2008-2009 season and set the still-standing franchise record for goals scored by one player in a season (33). He was the recipient of another heavy hit in March of 2009, which took him out of the lineup for several months, and he returned [probably too] early in hopes of helping the Preds make the playoffs (they didn't). He played one more season with the Preds (during which he received yet another concussion in the spring) before being traded to New Jersey for Matt Halischuk and a 2nd round pick.

Something I find worthy of mentioning is Arnott's point-per-game percentage throughout the remainder of his career. Whether the result of age, multiple concussions, or a combination of both, Arnott changed after the 08-09 season. He began the slow decent from NHL-star to high-end mediocrity, and he wasn't really ever able to turn back:

2007-2008 (Predators): 79 GP, 0.91

2008-2009 (Predators): 65 GP, 0.87

2009-2010 (Predators): 63 GP, 0.73

2010-2011 (Devils): 62 GP, 0.38

2010-2011 (Capitals): 11 GP, 0.63

2011-2012 (Blues): 72 GP, 0.47

As we all know, he was turned away from the New York Rangers this year after failing to pass their physical. At this point, Jason Arnott's career is basically over, as it's highly unlikely that any other team will want to take a chance on him.

The Radulov/Arnott incident serves as proof of the unpredictable circumstances in which concussions can be received. Most players receive a concussion as the result of a poorly timed and/or illegal hit or elbow to the head, but concussions do not discriminate. It is important for players and fans alike to remember this. Nothing can ever be taken too seriously when it comes to head-related injuries. Jason Arnott had a long and successful NHL career, but the multiple concussions he sustained during his final few years had to have affected his ability to play to the best of his ability.

Nashville Predators 1st Quarter Grades: Defensemen & Goalies

160299308

Let's start our review of the Nashville Predators' 1st quarter of the 2013 season with the blueliners and goalies.

Our stats box for each player features three advanced stats:

  • ARC (Adjusted Relative Corsi) is meant to reflect the flow of play in 5-on-5. It reflects the Relative Corsi value for each player (how Total Shots For & Against per 60 Minutes balance during his ice time as compared to when he's on the bench), including an adjustment for whether that player starts more of his shifts at either end of the ice. For example, a player who is used in defensive-zone settings will naturally have poor raw Corsi numbers, so we compensate for that.
  • COMP reflects the Quality of Competition that player is facing, using their Relative Corsi values. The higher the number, the tougher the opponents that player is skating against.
  • TEAM shows a similar value for the Quality of Teammates that a player is skating with. Is he in there with the top line, or the scrubs?

Blum took a while to work his way into the lineup, but has performed moderately well in a protected role. He's usually worked the 3rd pair at even strength and is moving the puck well. He also plays a little under two minutes per game on the power play, which has yet to cash in while he's been on the ice.

Ellis is playing a larger role than Blum, with about 30% more ice time in both even strength and power play situations. While the flow of play in 5-on-5 hasn't been much to shout about (there have been many times when he gets pinned in his own zone and has trouble breaking up a cycle), the power play has worked out better, as he leads the Predators with two PP goals.

Gill's not a puck-possession type of defender, and is slotted into a 3rd-pair & penalty killing role. Even strength work is going OK, while the penalty kill has been a real plus. Gill plays a team-leading 3:38 per game shorthanded, and has put up solid results there so far.

A recent switch to top-pairing duty alongside Shea Weber has Hannan in deep water these days, as he's not the sort of puck-rusher or -mover to support top-line forwards (he does lead the Predators and is tied for 11th in the league with 29 blocked shots, however). He fills a secondary role on the penalty kill, where his skills are better suited.

We have to keep reminding ourselves that Josi is a 2nd-year player, and manage expectations appropriately. His puck-possession measures have been outstanding (on a team which desperately needs such a boost), while playing on either the 1st or 2nd pair at even strength, but his contributions on the power play haven't been as strong.

Klein is the stopper, given a steady diet of Top Six forwards to defend against, and a leading role on the penalty kill. He's getting that job done (without taking a single penalty along the way), and is leading the defense in scoring as well. You've come a long way, Kleiner.

Make sure to check back later for further game-day updates, and we'll have the Game Thread warmed up & ready for tonight's 7:00 p.m. faceoff...

The Blackhawks are an offensive dynamo, presenting the greatest challenge yet to the defense & goaltending which has helped the Predators earn 14 points in 11 games.

This is the first meeting between the Preds & Hawks this season. In 2011-2012, Nashville went 4-1-1 against Chicago.

Chicago Blackhawks

They're pretty much giddy in Chicago to see how Patrick Kane has started the season, as he stands 2nd in league scoring with 8 goals and 10 assists. There were questions last year about whether the Hawks might best be served by trading away the young playmaker, but that's been set aside now. Does credit for this maturation go to his time over in Europe during the lockout?

Every off season we have wondered when Kane is going to "grow up" and take that next step towards super stardom. We all know Kaner's off ice reputation and incidents all too well. For years we've heard jokes about shirtless limo rides, upstate New York cab drivers and Cinco De Mayo parties gone haywire. We have seen his defensive lapses and many nights where he has looked like his head and heart just aren't into the game. We have been hearing him say all the right things at the start of every training camp. I really think playing in Europe during the lockout was the best thing to ever happen to him. We have seen a more mature and focused Patrick Kane this year and I have to believe that his time in Switzerland has a lot to do with the results we've enjoyed this year.

Over the course of his career, Kane has 11 goals & 16 assists for 27 points in 31 games against Nashville.

According to Daily Faceoff, here are the lines and d-pairings Chicago is using right now:

Brandon Saad Jonathan Toews Marian Hossa
Patrick Sharp Dave Bolland Patrick Kane
Bryan Bickell Andrew Shaw Viktor Stalberg
Michael Frolik Marcus Kruger Jamal Mayers
Duncan Keith Brent Seabrook
Sheldon Brookbank Nick Leddy
Johnny Oduya Niklas Hjalmarsson

Nashville Predators

The Predators don't have any time to stew over last night's controversial overtime loss at Minnesota, and instead need to focus on bringing a strong effort against a Blackhawks team which hasn't played since Thursday at Phoenix. Chicago has been waiting & practicing here in Nashville while the Preds went up to play the Wild, so you can expect them to establish a high tempo right from the opening faceoff.

After having last night off, Pekka Rinne is expected to get the start, and the Predators will need him at his best. He's 10-7-1 all-time against Chicago, with a 2.44 GAA, .919 save percentage, and one shutout.

Will last night's loss lead to Barry Trotz making any lineup changes? It's been a while since Matt Halischuk hit the ice (the San Jose game on February 2), but going with seven defense seems to be working pretty well for the Predators.

The Preds will not have a morning skate today given their late-night arrival from Minnesota, so we may not hear about lineup decisions until later in the afternoon. Check back later for updates, and join us in the Game Thread for a 7:00 p.m. start!

Things have really tightened up in the West as two points separate the bubble teams above and below the line. The trade winds are starting to blow strong as some teams will look to improve their rosters before playoff time. As crazy as it sounds, we are already a quarter of the way through this truncated season. The West is still wild, however, as teams battle to put their claim on a playoff spot.

Division Leaders: Chicago, San Jose,Vancouver

Will the Chicago Blackhawks ever lose in regulation? Nashville Predator's fans sure hope so, as they welcome the Hawks to Bridgestone arena later today. The Chi City train is on a roll, winning three consecutive games and having a +14 goal differential. Patrick Kane continues to shine this and is only behind Thomas Vanek in scoring this season with 18 pts in 11 games. Chicago won both of their games this week, including a trouncing of Phoenix that closed the Torres-Hossa incident from last year's playoffs in the Hawks' minds. Corey Crawford is 6-0-2 in his appearances this season, boasting a 1.82 GA (5th in NHL) and a .930 save percentage. History says Crawford may be playing well over his abilities, but right now he is keeping the Blackhawks steady and not giving up any soft goals. This is a really good team that has a healthy mix of grit and skill. Chicago has a challenging
week ahead of them, though, as they are at Nashville before returning to the Windy City for matchups against San Jose and Anaheim.

Speaking of Anaheim, who would have guessed the Ducks would be leading the Pacific Division at any point this year? Anyone? The Ducks continue their surprising success with a win against Divisional rival San Jose last Monday, a dismantling of the Colorado Avs on Wednesday, losing a tightly contested game to Dallas on Friday, and winning in a shootout against St. Louis last night. They have won five of their last six. The ageless Teemu Selanne leads the team with 14 points in 11 games and is currently hotter than a Finnish sauna, with four points in his last two games. Fellow Finn and ageless wonder Saku Koivu is equally as hot, with 13 points in 11 games so far. The real story for Anaheim, however, is the emergence of 30-year-old rookie goalie Viktor Fasth, who is undefeated in his five starts this season. The Swedish netminder is having an incredible campaign, with 10 GA in six games, good for a 1.72 GAA and a .932 save percentage. There was some speculation whether the Ducks would be able to re-sign captain Ryan Getzlaf and linemate Corey Perry at the end of the year, but a little success may convince the superstars to stay. Anaheim has a difficult week coming up, a Central Division fiesta with Chicago, Detroit, and Nashville on the docket.

The Vancouver Canucks are also on a hot streak, winning five in a row including a dominating victory over the Minnesota Wild on Thursday. The goaltender odyssey continues as Roberto Luongo and Cory Schneider continue to split starts, with both netminders making strong cases to be the starter for the Canucks this year. At this point, bench boss Alain Vigneault might as well flip a coin, as there is very little difference between the two goalies' performance. Vancouver has a light week ahead of them, with home tilts against the Wild and the Stars.

Playoff Contenders

San Jose had a rough week, as the Sharks dropped all three of their decisions. The offense has dried up for the black and teal as San Jose was only able to put up four goals in the three games. The Sharks have now lost four in a row after going 7-0 to start the season. Patrick Marleau has cooled off considerably as he has a big goose egg in San Jose's last five games. The Sharks should be able to bite back with a long road trip to the Central Division this week as they square off with the Blue Jackets, Predators, and Blackhawks.

The Nashville Predators climbed above the playoff line as they roughed up St. Louis and Los Angeles before falling in OT to Minnesota last night. Nashville is currently enjoying a hot streak as they have collected points in their last five games. Barry Trotz is pushing all the right buttons for this team as the Predators have surrendered five goals in as many games after giving up 18 in the first six games of the year. The Preds are currently running seven defensemen, which has really helped veterans Hal Gill and Scott Hannan stay fresh while allowing youngsters Ryan Ellis, Jonathan Blum, and Roman Josi to play in favorable situations. It would be remiss of me to not give a stick tap to Colin Wilson, who has collected five points in his last three games. Wilson is really playing up to expectations this year and has been a force in the offensive zone. Nashville will need to continue their strong play as they have a grueling schedule ahead: a four game home stand against Chicago, San Jose, Phoenix, and Anaheim this week.

Remember all the hockey pundits earlier this year saying how bad the Detroit Red Wings were going to be? Forget about it. The Winged Tires are flying high right now with back-to-back wins against St. Louis and Edmonton. Despite having a weak blueline, Detroit's offense and the coaching genius of Mike Babcock are keeping the Wings in the hunt for a playoff spot. The biggest knock on Detroit was their scoring depth, but they seemed to put that speculation to rest on Thursday as their bottom lines combined for four goals and a plethora of assists against the Blues. While I still question their blueline depth and their bottom lines, Detroit is hard to bet against making the playoffs. The Wings have a three game home stand at the Joe this week against L.A., St. Louis, and Anaheim.

Oh how the mighty have fallen! St. Louis, like San Jose, started the year unbeatable and looked like they had the Central Division in the palm of their hand but have been ruthlessly dethroned. The Blues have yet to win a game in February, giving up 21 goals in a four game losing streak. Things are not looking too good for the Notes as they have tumbled down the standings and do not look like the Cup contender I pegged them to be earlier this year. St. Louis is going to have to dig deep as they are without Jaroslav Halak for the foreseeable future. The Blues should get back on track this week with a home game against the struggling L.A. Kings before traveling to Detroit and Calgary.

The Dallas Stars continue their rollercoaster-like season with a bad end to January (lost four in a row) and a terrific start to February (won four out of five). The Stars are enjoying a three game winning streak, including a big win against the Anaheim Ducks on Friday. In case you missed it; you have to watch Loui Eriksson's sniper shot against Anaheim. That was a pure goal scorer's tally and one of the best goals scored this year. Kari Lehtonen has been strong between the pipes, posting a 6-2-1 record and a .928 save percentage. Dallas has a relatively easy schedule ahead of them this week with games against Edmonton and Calgary before having a tough one against Vancouver.

On the Bubble

The Phoenix Coyotes had a mixed bag of chocolates recently, going 3-1-1 in February. The return of goalie Mike Smith certainly helps the Yotes after he missed four games with a groin injury earlier this year. Phoenix needs more offense, as right now they are -1 in their goal differential. After a quick start to the year, Antoine Vermette has been unable to find the score sheet in his last six games. The Coyotes are a bit banged up, but they are going to need to get it together offensively if they are going to make the playoffs. This week is a great time to start as the Desert Dogs have Colorado, Nashville, and Columbus on the docket.

The Minnesota Wild are also on the bubble, dropping games against Phoenix and Vancouver this week before winning a very physical game against the Predators last night. The Wild's offense has completely dried up, as they have only recorded four goals in as many games this month. Ryan Suter remains hot and cold; recording six assists including two against his former teammates last night. But he remains a -7 on the year, so the big contract is not paying off yet. Devin Setoguchi finally found the back of the net, which is good news for Minnesota, as they will need him to contribute offensively this year if they are going to make the playoffs. Minnesota has an easy week ahead of them, visiting Calgary and Vancouver before heading home for a showdown with the struggling Avs. Interesting fact: the Wild and the Washington Capitals are the only NHL teams to be winless on the road this year.

The Hung-Over

I know the standings say differently, but I just can't put the Los Angeles Kings out of potential contention. Their team is way too deep and has too much experience for them to be out of the playoff hunt. The Stanley Cup champions made a low-risk, high-reward move this week in bringing in former first rounder Keaton Ellerby while only giving up a fifth round pick in this year's draft. L.A. is not getting enough out of their stars right now, as Anze Kopitar, Dustin Brown, Mike Richards, and Jeff Carter have all really struggled so far this year. This team should not be averaging less than two goals a game with the talent they have, and the law of averages suggests they won't be there for long. Things don't get any easier for the Kings as they have back-to-back tilts against Detroit and St. Louis this week before returning to the Staples Center for a game against the Blue Jackets.

Maybe Next Year

I had a long chat with an Edmonton fan earlier this week about the state of the Oil and while we didn't agree on everything, we agreed that the Oilers do not look like a playoff team this year. The Oilers are kind of like a V-8 engine powering a little dune buggy: they have too much horsepower for their frame to handle. While the offensive creativity and pure skill is there, the maturity and attention to detail is not quite together for the young club. Sam Gagner has impressed this season; recording a point in every game he has played in and leads the Oiler's offense with 11 points. Rookie sensation Justin Schultz is proving he is the real deal playing a team-high 23:24 minutes a night and notching seven points in 11 games. To put that in perspective, Shea Weber plays 27 a night and Roman Josi plays 23 a night for Nashville. Trade winds seem to be circling around Edmonton as Ryan Whitney has not been living up to expectations and Magnus Paajarvi continues to struggle in his third NHL season. The Oil have dropped five in a row, but look to get back on track with games against Columbus, Dallas, and Colorado this week.

Colorado had a rough week, dropping their games against the Stars and the Ducks. The Avalanche are struggling in all aspects of the game, averaging just over two goals a game while surrendering an average of two and a half. The Avs have a solid young core, but they can't seem to figure out their blueliners and have a bad habit of not playing a full sixty minutes. PA Parenteau continues to be hot, with nine points in 10 games, but outside of him and Duchene, nothing is really coming together at the right time for the Avs. If Colorado were able to add solid a blueliner or two, they might be in playoff contention this year as the team simply has too much talent to be shutout for too long. Colorado has a big week as they face off against the Coyotes on Monday before a pair of divisional matchups with Minnesota and Edmonton.

Blow It Up?

Yes, I know Calgary is actually 12th in the West, but I am not buying Flames this year. They are a -8 in their goal differential and are struggling in net as Miikka Kiprusoff is giving up an average of 3.24 goals a night. Might this be the year we finally see Jarome Iginla traded? Time will tell about the captain's future, but this Flames team is not looking too hot (please excuse the pun) and Iginla would be a perfect trading chip for the Flames to start a dynamic rebuild. Center Mikael Backlund is injured and is not expected to return for a few weeks, furthering the Flames' woes. The Flames have a hard week ahead as they have a three game homestand against Minnesota, Dallas, and St. Louis.

The Columbus Blue Jackets have found themselves in a familiar, but unpleasant place: at the bottom of the Western Conference standings. They should, however, take heart in knowing that they are not the worst team in the NHL as the Florida Panthers and the Washington Capitals are fighting for that sad title. Columbus needs better goaltending, better offense, and more from just about everyone in the locker room. The Jackets have back-to-back games against Edmonton and San Jose today and tomorrow before having another back-to-back set against Los Angeles and Phoenix on Friday and Saturday. My other stick tap of the week goes to Columbus Blue Jacket fans that continue to support this franchise even with all the struggles and setbacks. It can't be easy enduring this kind of disappointment. While I will never like the Jackets, I have a ton of respect for their long-suffering fan base.
