The Wild aren't awful, but they aren't exactly a contender, either. They're getting outshot regularly, the goaltending hasn't been able to make up for that, and the special teams have been nothing to get excited about. The Predators, meanwhile, are playing Rope-A-Dope, getting out-shot by a healthy margin but relying on a collapsing defense and Pekka Rinne's goaltending to hold onto a lead whenever they get one.

Previous Meeting

Nashville's recent 7-game road trip began January 22nd with a 3-1 victory at Minnesota, in which Chris Mason saw his only action of the season so far.

Minnesota Wild

All that optimism which took root in Minnesota on July 4th, as Ryan Suter and Zach Parise were flashing twin $98 million smiles and shaking hands with Craig Leipold, has turned sour of late, as the Wild come into tonight's game on a 3-game losing streak.

Naturally, this is leading to crazy talk in the press:

Less than three weeks into the most promising season in franchise history, the Wild played without grit or intelligence in a 4-1 loss to Vancouver, a failure that could alter expectations and shorten tenures surely as it brought jeers raining down on the Xcel Energy Center ice on Thursday night.

In hockey, when you've tried everything but firing the coach and your team doesn't respond, you tend to fire the coach. Maybe owner Craig Leipold won't force that move immediately, but he has no reason to be patient after making an immense investment in front-line talent and watching his team fall apart.

Whether Mike Yeo is responsible for his team's slump is irrelevant.

--- Jim Souhan, Star Tribune (h/t to Hockey Wilderness)

Of course, that kind of "it's so crazy it just might work" talk is about the worst way to run a franchise, but hey, go for it.

All eyes in Smashville will be on Ryan Suter, of course, the guy who left the Predators as an unrestricted free agent, yet still draws ire from many fans.

Ryan Suter

#20 / Defenseman / Minnesota Wild

6-1

198

Jan 21, 1985

10 games, 4 assists and a -7 Plus/Minus have Predators fans howling in derision, and the puck-possession metrics haven't looked good for Sutes so far, either as he boasts the worst Corsi numbers on the Minnesota defense so far. Let's just remember that reworking a blueline is no simple task, as we've seen in Nashville already.

The guy who is paying early dividends is Zach Parise, whose 6 goals and 4 assists so far lead the Wild in scoring.

Nashville Predators

With a four-game winning streak under their belt, confidence is rising among the Predators' ranks. Martin Erat and Colin Wilson have the hot hands up front, and the lineup has enjoyed a rare amount of stability, as Barry Trotz tends not to change much while the wins are coming.

Pekka Rinne

#35 / Goalie / Nashville Predators

6-5

209

Nov 03, 1982

In goal, Pekka Rinne has enjoyed considerable success against Minnesota historically, with an 8-3-1 record in 13 games, with 3 shutouts and a 2.20 GAA.

So head over to Hockey Wilderness to sample the mood in Minnesota, check back here later for pre-game updates as they become available, the Game Thread to follow along with tonight's action, and tune in to 102.5 The Game later as I'm joining birthday boy Willy Daunic tonight for the post-game show.

Nashville Predators Analysis: With 7 D Playing, Who Loses Ice Time?

125645802

Perhaps the biggest question surrounding the Nashville Predators heading into this season was how they would replace Ryan Suter on defense. We all knew it would take a committee-style approach to backfilling the 26 minutes a night that Suter contributed, but who would have guessed that the committee would have 7 members instead of 6?

For the last three games, Barry Trotz has dressed an extra defenseman, which has not only given Jonathon Blum a chance to get on the ice, but has also perhaps made better use of this group collectively. Even though some guys may not be getting the 20 minutes a night they'd prefer, this alignment seems to allow Trotz to use each defenseman to the best of his ability.

Take a look at the following chart, which lays out the total ice time per game for each Preds blueliner (click for a bigger version):

Follow @Forechecker

The bottom line is that since no single guy can replace Suter's all-around effectiveness, we see a number of players being used in very specific roles.

  • Hal Gill is the penalty-killing specialist, getting 3rd-pair minutes at Even Strength.
  • Jonathon Blum is the opposite of Gill, getting in some Power Play work and marginal even-strength time, but not a second on the PK.
  • Kevin Klein is the right-side PK leader, and faces a steady diet of Top Six competition at even strength as well.
  • Roman Josi has taken the biggest hit since the shift was made to go with 7 D, as his Even Strength ice time has dropped by about 5 minutes per game.
  • Ryan Ellis has also seen his EV ice time dip by about 4 minutes, but he and Josi are also major figures on the Power Play.
  • Scott Hannan has recently stepped up onto the top Even Strength pair alongside Shea Weber, but the only increase in his ice time (about a minute per game) has been due to increased Penalty Killing work of late.
  • Shea Weber, as always, is soaking up minutes in all key situations.

What we see is that Jon Blum's opportunity to play is coming at the expense of Roman Josi and Ryan Ellis, but that's not at all a bad thing. Nashville is famously patient with the development of their young defensemen, and as long as the players are comfortable with the amount of work they're getting, this is probably the best way to make use of a group of specialists.

For example, you generally like to have four offensively capable blueliners to man your power play. Weber, Josi and Ellis are obvious choices, but Gill, Hannan or Klein? Not so much, so Blum adds a dimension that keeps both power play units humming along.

Similarly, on the penalty kill you have Weber & Klein on the right side, alongside Gill & Hannan, who are more suited to such work than Josi, Blum or Ellis are at this point.

To fill 8 primary special teams roles on defense (4 PP, 4 PK), you have only one guy (Shea Weber) who you'd really feel comfortable filling two of them. Until someone steps up and demonstrates that they can provide that kind of all-around effectiveness (likely candidates being Josi on the PK, or Klein on the PP), Barry Trotz might be best served to keep dressing 7 defensemen for quite a while.

The Achilles Heel of the Kings has been the goaltending so far. With Jonathan's Quick & Bernier both laboring under the .900 mark, even outstanding Shots For & Against numbers are undermined. The question then becomes, are the goalies to blame, or is it defensive breakdowns by the skaters?

In the previous meeting between these two teams this season, back on January 31st, the Predators took a 2-1 shootout decision as Sergei Kostitsyn won it in the 8th round of the skills competition.

Los Angeles Kings

King_joffrey_baratheon_game_of_thrones_medium The Kings haven't played their best hockey so far, but with 8 points after 8 games they haven't lost contact with the top teams in the West, either. Basically that makes them the best last-place team in the league, in a way. Given the manner in which the Kings stumbled through most of the 2011-2012 regular season before flipping the switch aroudn the Trade Deadline, one has to wonder at which point confidence that a turnaround will come might turn into complacency.

The Kings enter tonight's game after coming from behind to beat Columbus Tuesday night 4-2, leaving L.A. fans with a fine aftertaste:

The Kings out-shot Columbus 31-20 and 17-2 in the second alone. Columbus formulated a comeback in the third but were stifled by Jonathan Quick who looked better in the that period than he has all season.

--- Jewels From The Crown

Yesterday Los Angeles cleared up a little bit of a logjam at center by dealing Andrei Loktoinov to New Jersey for a 5th round pick this summer. Loktoinov hadn't been able to crack the NHL lineup, so this doesn't affect the forward lines we should see tonight:

Dustin Brown Anze Kopitar Justin Williams
Simon Gagne Mike Richards Jeff Carter
Dwight King Jarret Stoll Trevor Lewis
Kyle Clifford Colin Fraser Jordan Nolan

The most interesting decision might be who the Kings put in goal. Check out the career numbers for L.A.'s netminders against the Predators:

Nashville Predators

Confidence is higher around this team as of late, thanks to three consecutive victories to wrap up their two-week road trip with a 4-2-1 record. Sure, two of those wins were in the shootout, but Saturday's victory at San Jose was especially impressive, given how Nashville was able to befuddle the Sharks' attack all night long.

As for the forward lines? Those are a bit of a mishmash right now, as the team has gone with seven defensemen in the last two games. That leads to the forwards one man short of filling out four full lines, so guys rotate around and you see a nuimber of different combinations throughout the game. SK74-Fisher-Erat was a pretty stable trio, but David Legwand found himself centering Gabriel Bourque, Colin Wilson, Brandon Yip, and Craig Smith at various times against St. Louis.

Nashville Predators 3, Los Angeles Kings 0: Colin Wilson Scores Twice as Preds Win 4th Straight

160915315

The Nashville Predators kept the good times rolling tonight, pushing their winning streak to four games in a triumph over the Los Angeles Kings. Colin Wilson led the way with two goals, and Pekka Rinne made 32 saves to push his record to 4-2-3 and earn his first shutout of the campaign. Kevin Klein added two assists from the blueline, and Shea Weber finally got on the board as well, assisting on the third Preds goal.

Random Observations

  • In the sense that many criticized Shea Weber for taking a fighting major against Jared Boll of Columbus in the season opener, I'll take a scrap between Richard Clune and Kyle Clifford (1 goal, 4 assists on the season) any day.
  • Earlier today I mulled over whether defensive breakdowns might be a part of why L.A.'s goaltending numbers are so awful, and that would appear to be the case on Gabriel Bourque's opening goal. He was wide open between the circles while all eyes were on David Legwand below the goal line, allowing him to easily one-time the pass and beat Jonathan Quick.
  • That said, Bourque was buzzing right from the opening bell, using his speed to get on top of opponents quickly, and taking every shot opportunity he could. I'm hoping that Barry Trotz taps Sergei Kostitsyn on the bench during those shifts, and tells him "DO THAT".
  • There was a little bit of an odd sequence early in the second period in which the top portion of Pekka's goal stick snapped off. Goalies are allowed to play with a broken stick until a stoppage in play, unlike skaters (Rule 10.4).
  • Colin Wilson with back-to-back goals to make it 3-0? Yes, please. This marks the first time that Willy has had consecutive multi-point games in the NHL. Yup, he's a driving force all right.
  • Paul Gaustad earned his pay tonight on the faceoff dot, going 15-for-22 including an important 14-for-20 in the defensive zone, as the Preds were wildly outshot after taking that early lead (much as in the St. Louis game Tuesday).

3 Questions with St. Louis Game Time's Laura Astorian

Wednesday, February 6, 2013

20130122_ajw_ag5_304

1) How is the Wade Redden signing working out?

So far so good - the couple of goals he has scored so far have gone to show that the Blues' system promotes even scoring from all lines as well as the defense -- anyone can flourish under Hitchcock's system, including washed up old blue-liners who now get to play with a top Norris candidate. I had middling expectations, so consider them exceeded.

2) With Vladimir Tarasenko's hot start, who does this threaten on the Blues' depth chart? Are there any top forwards in danger of losing their spot to the rookie?

I would say Matt D'Agostini's pretty much already lost his spot. He's barely played, and it's rough for a former 20 goal scorer to only see action in two of the team's first 8 games. If the Blues ever need to trade for someone, I can see him being packaged away. That being said, the Blues never trade unless they absolutely have to, so it looks like D'Ags is just part of a cycling line up of occasional space-fillers. If Tarasenko weren't here, he'd be playing every night.

3) Halak shut out the Preds in the teams' last meeting, but he's now on IR. Does Brian Elliott realize that he's just Brian Elliott, or is he looking to lead the league in save percentage again?

I think he realizes that last year was closer to fluke status than anything else. He still knows that he's capable of playing at a high level, though, and I think he's going to try his darndest to replicate last season's performance.

Make sure to come back later for tonight's Game Thread, but before then, head over to St. Louis Game Time and check out the Three Questions I answered for them regarding the Predators.

Nashville Predators @ St. Louis Blues: Complete Coverage

What better way to wrap up an arduous 7-game road trip than with a rematch against Central Division rival St. Louis (7:00 p.m. on FS-TN)?

Things are pretty much firing on all cylinders for St. Louis these days, while the Predators are trying to work some bad gas out of the engine.

Previous Meetings

January 21: St. Louis 4, Nashville 3 - the Preds coughed up a 3rd period lead and fell in the shootout at Bridgestone Arena.

January 24: St. Louis 3, Nashville 0 - on the second game of this current road trip, Jaroslav Halak earned the shutout.

St. Louis Blues

The Blues have had all weekend to stew over a 5-3 loss to Detroit on Friday, only their second of the season.

As noted over at St. Louis Game Time, the Preds have fared well in this series in recent years:

Nashville has the edge since the [2004-2005] lockout, winning 21 games in regulation, four in overtime and eight in shootouts, outscoring St. Louis 126 to 107. In comparison, the Blues won 11 games in regulation, 1 in overtime and 5 in shootouts. In the 50 games since the lockout, a whopping 18 (36%) have gone past regulation to determine a winner.

Oh boy, looks like we could be in for another shootout (yawn).

In goal, look for Brian Elliott to get the start, as Jaroslav Halak is out with a groin (presumably he's having a good time). Elliott had a career year in 2011-2012 with an absurd .940 save percentage (his previous best was a middling .909), so here's to hoping he looks across the ice at Pekka Rinne and remembers that indeed, he is not worthy.

While the Blues have as deep a group of talented forwards as any team in the league, the guy to watch out these days is the recently christened Rookie of the Month for January, Vladimir Tarasenko. Here's what DailyFaceoff.com has listed for their lines and d-pairings:

David Perron David Backes T.J. Oshie

Jaden Schwartz Scott Nichol Ryan Reaves

Barret Jackman Kevin Shattenkirk

Nashville Predators

The Preds actually made a short stop back here in Nashville before heading out to wrap up this road trip, and will seek to build on hard-fought back-to-back shootout victories at Los Angeles and San Jose. The big question is whether Martin Erat will be ready to go, after sitting out Saturday's game with swelling in his foot after taking a shot during practice. In his absence, Sergei Kostitsyn enjoyed a promotion (which paid off with Nashville's only regulation goal), and Jon Blum got his first chance to play, as Barry Trotz went with 7 defenseman.

The 7 D situation was especially interesting, as Hal Gill focused primarily on penalty killing duties and Blum got some power play time, allowing him to put his talents to best use.

When you go back to those stats at the top of this preview, the overriding theme heading into tonight is that St. Louis is likely to dominate the shot totals heavily, leaving a heavy burden on the Preds' MVP so far, Pekka Rinne.

Nashville Predators Analysis: Player Usage Charts Highlight Colin Wilson's Performance

159898957

Rob Vollman of Hockey Prospectus has passed along his latest Player Usage chart for the Nashville Predators, which provides an individual breakdown of how Shots For & Against are flowing in an easy-to-read, visual format.

There are 3 pieces of information which go into this chart:

  1. The bubble for each player is their Relative Corsi (the balance of Total Shots For & Against in 5-on-5 action while that player is on the ice, as compared to how the Preds do while that player is on the bench). Blue is positive, Pink is negative, and the size of the bubble reflects the size of the number (small & blue is OK, big & pink is awful, big & blue is great).
  2. The vertical location reflects the Quality of that player's Competition (the higher up, the tougher the opponents that player is facing during his ice time).
  3. The horizontal location shows the balance of offensive- vs. defensive-zone faceoffs a player was on the ice for, a reflection of whether they're being placed by the coaches in offensive or defensive situations. This is expressed as a percentage, so 50 means a 50/50 split between offensive and defensive zone draws.

Make sure to check out the Hockey Prospectus 2012-13 (they do tremendous work with this annual tome), and click the picture below to get a larger view if you have to:

The Good

Colin Wilson stands out as the big star here, with a big blue bubble reflecting a strongly positive balance of shots for & against during his ice time, which comes against quality opposition and an average dose of offensive- vs. defensive-zone faceoffs (we should note that this is no fluke, as he stood 2nd on the team in this regard last season). As a team, the Preds are stuck in their own end more often than not, so most guys are to the left of that 50/50 mark. Yes, he only has one goal and one assist to show for his efforts so far, but the hockey gods will reward his efforts eventually.

The other guys faring relatively well are Martin Erat, Patric Hornqvist, Roman Josi and Sergei Kostitsyn (although SK74 has enjoyed the benefit of being deployed in more offensive situations). Brian McGrattan's numbers would look more impressive if he played a regular shift, against regular players.

The Bad

Brandon Yip stands out as the player whose basic stats (2 goals, 1 assist) overshadow troubling puck possession fundamentals. Is he this year's Matt Halischuk?

Trouble has also been brewing on that third defense pair, as Hal Gill & Ryan Ellis are struggling a bit even against relatively weak competition. Keep an eye on Jonathon Blum to see if he can follow up his solid effort in San Jose on Saturday to potentially earn more playing time.

The Ugly

Rich Clune... yikes.

I'm also keeping an eye on Paul Gaustad, but given the extreme nature of his situation (he takes a zillion defensive-zone faceoffs for every offensive-zone one), his negative Relative Corsi is excused somewhat.

Discussion

The defense will be interesting to follow for the rest of this season. In the recent past, the combo of Shea Weber and Ryan Suter took on the toughs and also put in team-leading performances, but this year the burden will have to be spread out a bit more. It's a very glass half-full vs. half-empty situation. On the positive side, no single blueliner is standing out as an underperformer, but as a group, the Preds continue to get outshot on a regular basis, and over the long haul that doesn't bode well for team success.

Nashville Predators 6, St. Louis Blues 1: A Six-Pack of Preds Light the Lamp

20130205_jla_sr6_352

The Nashville Predators' offense burst out in grand fashion, scoring more goals tonight than they had in their last five games combined to knock off the Blues 6-1. Martin Erat and Colin Wilson led the way with three points apiece, and Pekka Rinne made 31 saves to earn his first regulation win of the season.

This gives the Preds a remarkable 4-2-1 record on this daunting seven-game road trip, and better yet leaves the team playing its best hockey of the season as they return home to Bridgestone Arena, for a game against the Los Angeles Kings Thursday night.

Your Random Observations:

  • We've been dogging Richard Clune to no end (and with good reason), but he gets a hearty tip o' the hat for scoring his first career NHL goal. That's a helluva thing.
  • Brian Elliott wasn't to blame in particular for any of those 1st period goals, but those are the kinds of things that don't happen often in a season like he had in 2011-2012. Welcome Back to Earth.
  • How about that goal for Gabriel Bourque in the second period to make it 5-0, and the effort to drive the net by Colin Wilson? Easily the highlight of the year so far...
  • It's only natural that the Blues were going to come back and outshoot the Predators wildly from that point, it's the nature of the beast. All in all, the Preds kept things from getting too dangerous.
  • The goal by Martin Erat (welcome back, btw) to make it 6-1 was a thing of beauty. First he let a pass up high go through him to the right point, causing a bit of disruption for the St. Louis defense as they had to re-adjust on the fly, but he kept cruising to the net, where Marty easily picked up a rebound and banged home the score. As physically impressive as the Wilson/Bourque goal was, this was tremendously clever.

Don't sweat the negative numbers, they're a direct result of what we call the Score Effect. When a team gets a big lead, they consistently go into a bit of a shell, often opting for a dump into the zone and a line change rather than going for offensive chances. That's why, when I post game previews, I look at Fenwick Close as a measure of team puck possession - what truly matters is how the Shots For & Against flow when the game is truly on the line.

NHL Western Conference Standings: Chicago & San Jose Riding High

Monday, February 4, 2013

20130124_gav_an4_256

After two week of NHL play, the cream has risen, but the rest of the Western Conference standings have tightened up. It looks like it will be an exciting race for the 4-8 spots as many bubble teams had good showings this week. With 6 teams within one point of that grouping, February will be a fun month.

Let's take a look at the current standings:

Chicago 7-0-2... 16pts
San Jose 7-0-1... 15pts
Vancouver 4-2-2...10pts
St. Louis 6-2-0...12pts
Anaheim 5-1-1...11pts
Detroit 4-3-1...9pts
Edmonton 4-3-1...9pts
Minnesota 4-3-1...9pts
------------------------------------------------
Nashville 3-2-3...9pts
Colorado 4-4-0...8pts
Phoenix 3-4-2...8pts
Dallas 3-5-1... 7pts
Columbus 3-5-1... 7pts
Los Angeles 2-3-2... 6pts
Calgary 1-3-2... 4pts

While the haves continue to dominate the have-nots, many of the games in the West are coming down to the wire as teams have combined for twenty overtime games this season, compared to the East's five. That should give you some indication of how tight this playoff race is going to be down the stretch. Chicago and San Jose remain on top of the Western Conference standings, as both clubs have yet to lose in regulation.

Division Leaders: Chicago, San Jose, Vancouver

Chicago continues to impress as the Blackhawks had a thrilling SO win over the Flames on Saturday to clinch this week's top spot in the standings. The ‘Hawks are both deep and talented, making them versatile and dangerous this year. Patrick Kane and Marian Hossa remain hot, but some of their secondary scorers have come alive as well making them all the better. Is there a hotter goaltending tandem in the league right now? Corey Crawford is 5-0-2 this season, boasting a 1.66 GA and a .934 save percentage. Ray Emery has also been impressive for the ‘Hawks, winning both of his decisions and having a .921 save percentage. ‘Hawks look like true cup contenders this year.

Joe Thornton and Patrick Marleau were leaped frogged by Buffalo's Thomas Vanek and Tampa Bay's Steven Stamkos for the league's leading scorers, but continue to put up big numbers for the Sharks. Thorton currently leads the NHL with 11 assists and Marleau leads the league with nine goals. The Sharks were finally taken down a peg at the hands of the Nashville Predator's Saturday night, but don't expect the Sharks to slow down anytime soon.

Vancouver continues to battle the injury bug, but has looked substantially better in their last two showings, shutting out divisional rival Colorado before beating the red-hot Blackhawks in a shootout. Perhaps the best news for the Canucks, however, is that forward Jannik Hansen was not suspended for cross-checking an official during the opening faceoff against the San Jose Sharks last Sunday. There is no way Hansen shouldn't have been suspended for his actions, but he somehow managed to escape the NHL Wheel of Punishment. Alex Burrows has been back to his old pest tricks as well, forcing Ryan Clowe to go bonkers in the penalty box. There is no timetable for Ryan Kesler's return, but the Canucks could use him.

Playoff Contenders

St. Louis had a relatively quiet week as they manhandled the woeful Blue Jackets on Thursday night but then dropped a game against the Detroit Red Wings on Friday. The rookie sensation Vladimir Tarasenko continues to make his mark in the league, recording 10 points in eight games this season. Overall, the Blues had a pretty easy week with only two games in five days. Next week should be more challenging as they have Nashville, Detroit, and Anaheim visiting their house.

Speaking of Anaheim, who would've guessed the Ducks would be ranked this high at any point of the season? The Ducks continue to roll with impressive wins against Minnesota and Los Angeles. Anaheim's offense is rolling, trailing only San Jose, Chicago, and St. Louis in goals scored. They are getting timely contributions up front and good net minding in back. A stick tap to Nick Bonino, who notched the first hat trick of his young career Saturday night against King's goalie, Jonathan Quick.

Detroit finds itself in a familiar place this week: above the playoff line. Newly appointed captain Henrik Zetterberg has dazzled so far this season, tallying 12 points in eight games for the Winged Tires - including a hat trick this week. Outside of Zetterberg and Datsyuk, however, the Wings' offense continues to sputter along as the rest of the roster only has 13 goals. The Red Wings also are suffering on the power play, as they have only found the back of the net five times on the man advantage. They have a difficult two weeks ahead of them. Their roster will be tested in the upcoming days.

Edmonton is currently playing like a young team: dynamic shifts up and down on a nightly basis. The Oilers are producing up front, but have yet to find consistency on their back end as they have given up 21 goals and only scored 20 through eight games this season. The young Oilers are clearly dynamic, but will need to settle in and really harness their creativity and focus it properly if they are going to make the playoffs. The club also sent Magnus Paajarvi down to the AHL on Thursday. Paajarvi has been ice cold for the Oilers and is currently the darling of many trade rumors.

The Minnesota Wild finally find themselves above the playoff line for the first time this season, but all is not well in the State of Hockey. Like Edmonton, Minnesota is currently suffering from being frustratingly inconsistent. They started the week strong by taking the superior Blues to a shootout last Sunday, before winning against the Blue Jackets and trumping Chicago in a shootout. It looked like Minnesota had finally turned the corner but they ended the week blowing a lead against Anaheim on Friday. Minnesota has a lot of star power, but it remains to be seen if they have the depth on the blueline to make the postseason. Ryan Suter and Zach Parise can cure a lot of ills, but they can't fix everything by themselves.

Below The Line

Speaking of consistency, the Predators have been nothing but consistent this season in their ability to draw games out to a shootout. Five of Nashville's eight games have gone to shootouts; giving Predator's fans a little bit of extra hockey for their money. The Predators started the week on a sour note as they were shutout by the Phoenix Coyotes. The Predators followed up with an ugly win against LA and a very solid defensive win against the Sharks, both victories of course coming in the shootout. Bench boss Barry Trotz has to be saying nightly prayers to the hockey gods for good health, as Nashville's leading scorer's Martin Erat and Patric Hornqvist remain injured. Goalie Pekka Renne had a great two games in net to secure the wins. The good news for the Predators is Sergei Kostitsyn found the back of the net on Saturday night in San Jose and Brandon Yip continues to contribute timely goals for the Preds. Craig Smith and Gabriel Bourque dazzled fans this weekend with some truly outstanding moves in shootouts. While out of playoff position this week, the Predators are continuing to improve and shouldn't be out for long.

Also on the outside looking in is the enigma known as the Colorado Avalanche. The Avs stand at .500 entering the third week of the season after dropping two against Edmonton and Vancouver before blowing the Flames out and getting the Oilers back later in the week. P.A. Parenteau seems to like his new surroundings as the sniper has scored eight points in as many games for the Avs with six of those points being goals. The four year NHL vet is simply on fire right now. Colorado has a challenging schedule coming up with Dallas and Anaheim visiting the Mile High City. We will learn a lot more about this team in the upcoming games.

The Phoenix Coyotes have had an up and down week, defeating Nashville on Monday, losing in a shootout against the Oilers and splitting a home and home with Dallas. Former Predator Steve Sullivan was on a hot streak before going down with a lower body injury with five points in six games. The Coyotes face a murderer's row this week with games against Minnesota and Chicago before going out to the West Coast for a date with the Sharks. It is a tribute to the players that this team even has the will to play night in and night out - given the sale of the team appears to have fallen through. Dave Tippett is one heck of a coach for keeping his guys focused.

Have you seen any shooting Stars lately? The Dallas Stars sure are shooting... just not in the direction they want to be in the standings. After a surprising start to the season the Stars have fallen back to earth losing three games in a four game span. The Stars' offense is struggling to produce right now as they have only notched five goals in four games. Center Derek Roy continues to be on the IR, which is bad news for the Stars as he was pegged to be their first line center this season. Dallas will have to come out strong over the next couple of games as they face Colorado, Edmonton, and Anaheim this week.

Columbus, while improved from last year, is still a serious work in progress. The newly acquired players from the Rangers seem to be fitting in nicely, but the transition isn't seamless as the roster is still trying to feel each other out. Sergei Bobrovsky and Steve Mason have almost identical stats so far this season and will continue battling for the starting job in Buckeye Country. The Jackets have a very light week next week with only L.A. and Calgary on the docket.

The L.A. Kings are continuing their Stanley Cup hang over, as they dropped two out of three this week including a blowout to California rival Anaheim. When Jonathan Quick is chased from a game, let alone the first seven minutes of the game, you know something is wrong. For a lineup that is as star-studded as it is, the Kings are really a black hole for offense right now as they have only tallied sixteen goals in seven games. Los Angeles is still a playoff worthy team, but they really have to pull it together here and quickly if they are going to make the playoffs. That refocusing starts this week when they travel to Columbus and Nashville.

The last five seconds of Calgary's game against Chicago yesterday really sums up the Flames this year: so close, yet so far. The Flames have been battling hard every night but just seem incapable of closing the deal. Like the Kings, the Flames really need a couple of their guys to step up offensively as they are really struggling to bury the puck in the net. Calgary has some very nice pieces but they just can't seem to figure out the puzzle. Calgary has a long road trip ahead of them as they travel to Detroit, Columbus, and back to Vancouver this week.

Nashville Predators 2, San Jose Sharks 1 (SO): Pekka Rinne Stands Tall

Sunday, February 3, 2013

No Patric Hornqvist? No Martin Erat?

No problem for the Preds, who went to a shootout for the fifth time in eight games this season, and took a 2-1 decision that lifts their record on this road trip to 3-2-1, a remarkable achievement considering how things looked a few days ago.

Not that things are hunky-dory by any means. Goal-scoring is still a tremendous concern, as 6:35 of 5-on-4 time and a full 2:00 of 4-on-3 failed to yield a goal. The penalty killers did a generally solid job, giving up one goal to Martin Havlat in the third which tied things up.

Pekka Rinne was the star of the show, however, keeping things tight and shutting down all three Sharks skaters during the shootout.
