This story is flat-out amazing, how Calgary's Jay Feaster almost committed an all-time blunder with the Ryan O`Reilly offer sheet:

It just goes to show how complicated this stuff is. It turns out that a wrinkle in the new CBA clarifies situations like Alexander Radulov's, allowing a guy to come back from Europe after the start of the season to his own team, but if it's for another franchise, he has to go through waivers.

We all know how the sports media world has been revolutionized over the last few years thanks to Twitter. Stories break and spread like wildfire within minutes, but if you're not following the right people, or if you're not on Twitter at all, you can miss out.

So what I've done is publish a page here at OTF that brings a wealth of Nashville Predators-related Twitter accounts into a single view, which you can take advantage of whether you have a Twitter account or not.

Check out the page right here. Bookmark away!

The nice thing about this page (which you can also find in the Library tab above) is that it updates automatically, so you can just leave it open and take a look occasionally to see what folks are talking about at the click of a mouse (which should be very, very handy at Trade Deadline time, for example).

Over 80 Twitter accounts make up this list, but if I missed any other worthies, feel free to let me know. Drop a comment here, tweet me at @Forechecker, or email me at the.forechecker@gmail.com.

Even Carrie Underwood Can't Find the Preds Game Sometimes

Thursday, February 28, 2013

Gyi0063556043

A running joke that the guys over at 104.5 The Zone have at the expense of Nashville Predators fans is the chorus of people asking where they can find a Preds game on TV, as sometimes games get bounced around from channel to channel from one night to the next.

This situation has improved considerably from years past, as all but a handful of games are on FS-TN this season, but on the odd occasion when a game is on SportSouth (like tonight at Anaheim), confusion reigns... and when the most famous Nashville Predators fan of all has trouble finding the right channel, this issue comes right back to the forefront:

Judging by the fundamentals, Anaheim sure looks like a team that's primed to fall back into the pack. Their control of the flow of play is only marginally ahead of Nashville's, and their goaltending is not quite as strong. Their 11.4 shooting percentage in 5-on-5 play, however, has kept them scoring in bunches (for perspective, the best such number over the last two seasons was 9.9% by Tampa Bay in 2011-2012). Going forward we should expect that scoring to drop off by 20% or more, taking a large slice out of their production.

In their two previous meetings this season, the Ducks took shootout decisions after playing to 2-2 ties during regulation & overtime play.

Anaheim Ducks

These are heady days in Anaheim, after a rotten campaign last year that had folks wondering whether a total rebuild might be required. Here's Jen from Anaheim Calling on the reversal of fortune:

The 2013 Ducks are now the polar opposite of themselves from the previous season. In 2011-2012, around November-December, the disaster that was the Anaheim Ducks saw the ousting of the team's long time coach, the hiring of a players coach and the circus of trade rumors involving everyone on the team (except forCorey Perry). After 16 games, this group of Ducks were 6-7-3 and the most popular girl at the party.

The East Coast and Canadian media couldn't get enough of the surprising debacle in Anaheim. I have no idea why they were so surprised, it's not like they didn't predict this exact scenario. The fire sale didn't happen and the Ducks started to improve greatly, going on a crazy tear, losing only three times in the month of January. As the team got better, the spotlight began to fade. The team crapped out to close the season but the attention wasn't so great.

Flash back to the present. After 16 games, the 2013 Ducks are 13-2-1. They currently sit at the top of the Pacific Division with a Scott Niedermayer-worth of points (27 - get it?!). San Jose sits eight points behind at 19. Chicago decided to be scary good this year leading the West overall with 33 points; the Ducks are second.

Where's the attention now? Exactly where is should be, somewhere else.

Perhaps the most surprising thing to me about the DUcks so far? Check out this stat line:

Sure, he's Anaheim's leading scorer, but just 8 penalty minutes for the habitually undisciplined captain? Maybe it's all the winning which has improved his mood.

The other big story there is the goaltending, led by Swedish rookie Viktor Fasth, the Swedish rookie who won his first eight starts before finally taking a loss Monday night against Los Angeles. Can the Predators get him rolling on a losing streak now?

Nashville Predators

Which Predators team will we see tonight? The one which ranks 29th in the league in goal scoring, or the one which came back from a two-goal deficit to beat Dallas Monday night?

If Nashville does hope to keep the offense rolling, it will take a whole-team effort, as there isn't one guy who can shoulder that load. We can try pointing fingers at one guy or another, but it's guesswork at this point. All we know is that relying on defense & goaltending to get the job done night-in, night-out will only take this team so far.

Anaheim 5, Nashville 1: Ducks Dynasty

162808985

The Predators fell behind quickly in this one, down 2-0 less than five minutes into the game, and ended up surrendering a hat trick to Kyle Palmieri, his first ever in the NHL, coming in his 46th career game. Craig Smith scored the lone goal for Nashville, coming off a nice play from Kevin Klein and Rich Clune, but that was about the only highlight of the night for the Preds.

They'll have a couple days to stew over this loss, as they don't play again until Saturday night at San Jose.

Random Observations

  • Peks, we love you, but those adventures behind the net get scary sometimes, like that opening goal for Bonino.
  • Of course, after one superstar got punked, it was time for our other one, as Weber simply got beat wide by Palmieri for goal #2.
  • The rest of the game was pretty much a dumpster fire, but seeing Rinne break his stick against the goal post probably says it best:

Nashville Predators Trade Brian McGrattan to Calgary

136322605

TSN's Bob McKenzie brings news of an interesting development:

Piskula is a 28-year-old defenseman with 10 games of NHL experience (none this season). He will presumably head to Milwaukee.

McGrattan had just recently been assigned to the Milwaukee Admirals after clearing waivers, and you might ask why the Flames wouldn't have just picked up McGrattan on waivers. One factor could be the Reserve List, which is capped at 50 players for each team. As of this morning, CapGeek showed Calgary at 49 players, so perhaps by returning something to the Preds via trade, they still leave themselves a little breathing room there. For McGrattan, it's a chance to return to the team he played 34 games for in the 2009-2010 season.

Bon Voyage, Big Ern.

The following release comes from the Predators:

Nashville Predators President of Hockey Operations/General Manager David Poile announced today that the club has acquired defenseman Joe Piskula from the Calgary Flames for forward Brian McGrattan. Piskula will report to the Predators primary developmental affiliate, the American Hockey League's Milwaukee Admirals.

Piskula, 28 (7/5/84), has 10 points (2g-8a) and 51 penalty minutes in 46 games for Calgary's AHL affiliate, the Abbotsford Heat, in 2012-13. A professional since the completion of his collegiate career in 2007, the Antigo, Wis., native has played in 10 career NHL games with Los Angeles (2006-07) and Calgary (2011-12), going scoreless and posting eight penalty minutes. In 370 career AHL contests with the Flames and Kings organizations, Piskula has 70 points (8g-62a) and 320 penalty minutes.

The 6-3, 214-pound blueliner played 112 games during a three-year career at the University of Wisconsin from 2004-07, posting 22 points (3g-19a) and 80 penalty minutes. In 2006, he helped the Badgers claim the NCAA title.

Brian McGrattan on Waivers

133206632

TSN's Bob McKenzie brought the news earlier today:

If the Nashville Predators are serious about contending for a Stanley Cup, they can't spare a roster spot on a player who simply doesn't help them win hockey games.

McGrattan has been with the Milwaukee Admirals for the last couple weeks on a conditioning stint, so this indicates the Predators don't want to hold an NHL roster spot for him going forward.

As I've said many times before, there's little practical value in having a heavyweight enforcer around these days, when that player can't take a regular shift and play at least 8-10 minutes of competent hockey a night. Go back and check out his (admittedly highly entertaining) fights as a Nashville Predator. How many had anything to do with the game being played? How many had to do with stopping a player from roughing up a teammate, or retaliating for such an incident?

I'd say that number is darned close to 0.

McGrattan is a well-liked player, and his personal story is worthy of respect and admiration. If the Nashville Predators are serious about contending for a Stanley Cup, however, they can't spare a roster spot on a player who simply doesn't help them win hockey games.

We should know around noon on Wednesday whether or not another team claims McGrattan off the waiver wire. If nobody bites, the Predators can assign him to the Admirals' roster full-time, at his NHL salary of $600,000.

Brian McGrattan Clears Waivers, Can Stay With Milwaukee

129327119

Darren Dreger brings word that Brian McGrattan can stay with the Milwaukee Admirals:

McGrattan joined the Predators after being picked up on waivers from Anaheim, back in October of 2011. He immediately made an impression on fans with his gusto for fighting and his interaction with the fans, whether it be motioning to the crowd during a bout, or sharing his off-ice thoughts via Twitter (@bigern10).

Under the new CBA, re-entry waivers would not be required to bring him back to Nashville if the need arises.

3 Questions with Defending Big D's Brandon Worley

20130221_ajw_an4_197

After reading this Q&A below, make sure to check out Defending Big D's game preview as well for more info about how the Stars are approaching tonight's tilt.

1) As a fellow fan of a Southern market team that tends to get out-shot and relies on its star Finnish goaltender to save the day, how would you assess the mood of the fan base in Dallas, given their long absence from the playoffs?

I'd say the best way to describe the mood is one of tepid optimism. The Stars are in a state of transition, which most fans seem to recognize and understand, while there is also a very real sense that the Stars almost certainly need to make the postseason or risk completely falling off the cliff in the Dallas sports landscape.

That being said, attendance this season has been very good and the Stars have shown improvement with each passing week -- for the most part. It's going to be interesting to see just how pressured the team will feel in regards to the postseason and how much fan pressure plays into that -- I don't know if fans can accept another No. 9 finish and talk about "moral victories" about coming so close with a valiant effort.

2) In stark contrast to the Predators, Dallas hasn't been shy about bringing in older veterans like Jaromir Jagr & Ray Whitney to play leading roles up front. What's the outlook for 2-3 years down the road? Do the Stars have young forwards on the rise who are expected to step up?

There has been a lot of talk about the older veterans the Stars have signed recently but that has glossed over the reality about the team; this is a very young and very inexperienced hockey team and perhaps the greenest hockey team the Stars have ever put on the ice in Dallas. That inexperience, however, is what has Stars fans so excited for the future.

The Stars will be playing three rookie defensemen tonight against the Predators and possibly four if Trevor Daley is unable to play. Brenden Dillon has certainly been the biggest surprise of the season and has locked down a top-pairing spot with Stephane Robidas, while Jame Oleksiak is showing the potential to be the elusive No. 1 defenseman the Stars have desperately been searching for.

The Stars also have Cody Eakin, Reilly Smith and Antoine Roussel getting big minutes at the forward group, with Eakin proving to be an incredibly well-rounded two-way center that gives fans a lot of hope for the future.

Looking a bit further into the future, the Stars have Matej Stransky, Brett Ritchie and Alex Chiasson all waiting in the wings. Chiasson could make the jump as early as this season while Ritchie and Stansky will be in the AHL to start the season next year.

3) What are your thoughts on Dallas joining a conference with Nashville, St. Louis, Colorado, etc. as has been discussed over the last few days? Are there any particularly significant rivalries that would be missed by leaving the Pacific Division behind?

While I think Stars fans will lament the loss of the rivalry with the Sharks and perhaps the Ducks, I don't think anyone is going to be that upset about it. Being able to actually watching divisional games on the road that finish before midnight? That's going to be such a big change for Stars fans I don't think anyone realizes just how tremendous it really is.

I also think that the rivalries in the new conference will actually be a bit more...legit. The Stars are already creating one with Nashville and games against Colorado are always spirited. Frankly, it's going to feel a bit more like coming "home," a return to where the Stars never should have left.

Thanks a ton to Brandon for his insight, and make sure you give him a follow on Twitter @BrandonWorley.

Dallas Stars @ Nashville Predators: Jaromir Jagr Comes to Town

The Stars are in the thick of the Western Conference's mushy middle, with a chance to work their way back into the playoffs for the first time since 2008 if they can continue putting the pieces together. In terms of style, they are not entirely unlike the Predators, getting out-shot and relying on goaltending to a large extent.

Dallas Stars

It's always a treat to see a real legend hit the ice, and tonight we get one in Jaromir Jagr, 5-time NHL scoring champ and two-time Stanley Cup champion from his early days in Pittsburgh. For 21 years, from 1980-81 to 2000-2001, there were only three different players who led the league in scoring: Wayne Gretzky, Mario Lemieux, and Jaromir Jagr. Yes, his best days are behind him, but the Mulletted One still has it, as the 40-year-old is tied for the team scoring lead in Dallas.

In 14 career games against Nashville, Jagr has 5 goals and 15 assists for 20 points. Speaking of mullets, did you see this recent tribute to Jagr's career by these fans in Calgary?

It's not all about the old timers, however. After going through a rocky few years both on the ice and off, the Stars are building towards a better future with in-house talent coming up through the system, and new ownership in place giving the front office the support it needs to return Dallas to the playoffs:

The Dallas Stars have never attempted to build a team in this manner before and it's a strategy that is entirely foreign to fans in North Texas. The Stars won the Stanley Cup in 1999 with one of the more veteran teams in the NHL, a conglomerate of gritty, salty players that quickly formed one of the more impressive hockey teams of the 1990s and early 2000s.

...

Under Joe Nieuwendyk the Dallas Stars have refocused on the draft and have put a premium on retaining draft picks and assets. While there have certainly been misses (Scott Glennie) the Stars have built one of the more respected farm systems in the NHL, one that is deeper than most even if a true "blue chip prospect" has yet to be found. The Stars have also shown an ability to find talent that had previously been overlooked, turning to a number of players that had gone undrafted that now fill prominent roles in the organization.

When we talk about building a successful organization, one that focuses not only on the present but the future as well, this is exactly what we should be expecting to see.

--- Defending Big D

So look for a mix of old and new out of this edition of the Dallas Stars, as the guy who's tied with Jagr for the team scoring lead is a 23-year-old on the rise:

Nashville Predators

So, what's the main story line to watch with the Predators these days? Hmm... I can't quite put my finger on it. Maybe it's the... no, that's not it.

Maybe they need to... no, it must be something else. Perhaps the lineup, and which guy Barry Trotz chooses to... no, that's not right either. Sorry, I just can't seem to complete a thought here, I wonder why that is.

Do you have a guess?

Nashville Predators 5, Dallas Stars 4: Roman Josi Scores the OT Winner

20130225_ajw_bs1_507

When the Dallas Stars took a 4-2 lead midway through the second period, things were looking pretty ugly for the offensively-challenged Nashville Predators. Thanks in part to a steady parade to the penalty box, however, the Preds got back into this one and took it to overtime before Roman Josi finished off his career-best night with a blast to win it, 5-4.

For Josi, two goals and two assists tonight give him his first career four-point game, following up nicely on Chris' profile which ran here on Sunday.

Random Observations

  • That 2nd period sure got nasty, didn't it? Yeah, I think these two teams will make perfectly fine division (or conference, whatever they end up calling it) rivals under realignment.
  • It was good to see Patric Hornqvist finally cash in after pouring lots of shots on net in recent games, he certainly brings a unique dimension to the attack.
  • As pesky as he was, you've got to love the way Vern Fiddler played tonight. He was chirping Rich Clune, agitating Mike Fisher, and scored a tremendous goal for Dallas.
  • Speaking of Fisher... HOLY COW that's the type of goal we've been waiting for from him.
  • While the goal-scoring was nice, I'm sure the coaching staff will bemoan some of the breakdowns which led to the deficit they had to make up for. Given the extent to which the lines were shuffled, it's not surprising to see some confusion in the defensive end.

NHL Western Conference Stock Exchange

Monday, February 25, 2013

162582536

This week instead of doing my usual Western Conference standings piece, I thought it would be a bit more fun for you, our loyal readers, to play a game. Imagine every Western Conference team has a set stock value at $100. Instead of just doing a simple ranking, I am going to "invest" in the teams I believe will make the playoffs at this point in the season and give a short explanation why. The hope is you will play along and make a "stock" chart of your own. Everyone starts with an imaginary $1500. You can invest that money any way you choose so long as every team has at least $5 worth of value.

Chicago Blackhawks $200 (200%)

The Blackhawks continue to be unbeaten in regulation. Marian Hossa did not miss a beat after he suffered a blow to the head which is great news for Chicago fans. This team is getting timely goal scoring and great goaltending. Hard to lose games with those two x-factors on your side. Law of averages says what goes up, must come down, and it will for the Blackhawks at some point, but for right now, that doesn't seem possible for this high flying hockey club.

Anaheim Ducks $175 (75%)

Without a doubt, the comeback team of the year. The Ducks are getting solid goaltending from their rookie Viktor Fasth who recently signed a two-year, $5.8M contract extension with Anaheim. Come trade deadline time, Jonas Hiller will be on the trade block and may bring back something of value for the Ducks. Ageless wonder Teemu Selanne is clipping along at a point per game. The Ducks have won five in a row. This team continues to impress and stands in second place in the West despite playing the fewest games in the conference.

Vancouver Canucks $139 (39%)

The Canucks welcomed center Ryan Kesler back into the fold and this team has looked significantly better since his return. As always, the Canucks stand atop the Northwest Division and that is unlikely to change. I would put the Canucks higher in the rankings, but I just can't bring myself to fully trust this team as they are a step below the above teams. The Luongo trade odyssey has finally reached its' happy conclusion... let the Saga of Cory Schneider begin!

St. Louis Blues $125 (25%)

Yes, they had a terrible stretch of games in February, but the Blues are just too talented to stay down for long. Jake Allen and Jaroslav Halak have steadied the St.Louis crease after a rough patch of games that saw the Blues give up an average of 5.2 GA. The power play is steamrolling the competition at just over 30% but the PK and goals against are starting to bring down the Notes. I believe Head Coach Ken Hitchcock will rally the troops and the Blues will be a solid playoff contender this season. Watch out, St. Louis is on the upswing.

Los Angeles $120 (20%)

Last year's Stanley Cup Champions have had one of the worst hangovers in recent memory. They started the year with three stinkers and were unable to find consistency until just recently. The Kings are 5-1 in their last six games and have out-scored opponents 19-7 during that stretch. L.A. has a bit of catch-up to do, but they should be a lock for the playoffs and will be a challenge down the stretch.

Nashville Predators $111 (11%)

After a rocky start, Nashville looked like they had finally found their groove but have now lost four of their last five games. They have been shutout in back-to-back games in this week after winning an 4-3 OT thriller against Detroit earlier in the week. The Predators need to improve their offensive strategy as they are currently at the bottom of the league in terms of goals per game but are as stingy as ever with the third ranked defense and the eighth ranked PK. Colin Wilson finally seems to have blossomed into the forward Preds fans always believed he would be. The return of Patric Hornqvist will improve the team's power play performance going forward and Nashville's offensive attack. The Preds are a playoff team, but they will have to get more offense going to hang on to that coveted fourth seed.

San Jose Sharks $110 (10%)

Will the real San Jose Sharks please stand up? After going undefeated in January, the once proud Sharks have turned into guppies, posting a single win in the month of February. That is absolutely incredible. The offense has dried up for the Sharks (26th) and the power play has turned into the flower-play (14th) but the goals against are good (6th) and the PK is great (5th). Despite their current losing streak, I believe the Sharks are too big to fail. Buying low but hoping to sell high on this Jekyll and Hyde hockey club.

Phoenix Coyotes $110 (10%)

I am not investing in the Coyotes roster, I am investing on Dave Tippett who has everyone in the locker room on the same page. Doubt this Coyotes team at your own peril. They may not be flashy or have the best defense, but they are consistent and determined. The Yotes are 6-4 since Mike Smith's return between the pipes, and he has consistently been their best player. Again, doubt this team at your own peril.

Minnesota Wild $95 (-5%)

The Wild spent a lot of money this off-season, and so far, the results really haven't been there for a team with high expectations. Perhaps the most amusing stat (well, at least for Preds and Devil fans) is the Minnesota offense is the 29 th in the league despite big names like Dany Heatley, Zach Parise, Mikko Koivu, and others. Perhaps the biggest problem facing the Wild is the lack of balance and teamwork. The players seem to be struggling to gel together as a team. Top defensive pairing Ryan Suter and Tom Gilbert have a combined 17 points, which is very good. They also have a combined -11 rating which is very, very bad.

Detroit Red Wings $90 (-10%)

While Detroit was able to defeat Nashville last night, the fact remains the Red Wings are simply not a very deep or good team this year. Are they in playoff contention? Yes. Are they going to make the playoffs? No. They don't have the special teams play to get it done this year (25th ranked PK and 26th ranked PP). They also lack any form of depth on the blueline. Jimmy Howard has put the team on his back, and while the Wings aren't winning games, Howard has done everything he can to give his team a chance to win. We are seeing the end of an era in Detroit.

Dallas Stars $85 (-15%)

Things were looking great for the Dallas Stars in early February, but then star netminder Kari Lehtonen went down with a groin injury. The Dallas Stars ability to make the playoffs rests on the Finnish netminder. If he is able to battle through his injury and not lose a step, Lehtonen will improve this team's chances going forward. He is one of the best in the business. The Stars also inserted injured center Derek Roy back into the lineup, which will certainly help on both ends of the ice. The Stars are a tricky one to figure out as they have the grit and skill to make the playoffs, but the West is so competitive it's hard to see them getting over the playoff hump.

Edmonton Oilers $65 (-35%)

The age-old question of youth versus experience seems to have taken its toll on the Oilers. It appears experience and trickery have trumped youth and skill. The Oilers are struggling to find goals right now, as they are ranked 27th in goals for this year and haven't been able to find consistency in offense or in defense. Unlike Detroit, Edmonton is enjoying excellent special teams play with the 5th ranked power play unit and the 4th ranked PK. Taylor Hall's two games suspension fora knee-to-knee hit earlier this week was not a surprise, and he should feel lucky he wasn't injured on the play either. Invest on the Oilers' future, but not their present.

Colorado Avalanche $40 (-60%)

Much like the Oilers, the Avs are not good enough to compete for a playoff spot this year, but they have a few bright spots in Matt Duchene (17 points in 16 games) and recently signed, P.A. Parenteau (14 points in 16 games). Avs fans have to be excited for the return of last year's Calder Memorial Trophy winner, Gabriel Landeskog. He is a truly special player. Colorado really needs to improve their blueline before they can be a playoff contender. The Avs also need to bolster their prospect pool as it is a bit shallow at the moment.

Calgary Flames $20 (-80%)

Despite big wins against Dallas and Minnesota this week, the Flames are 27th in goals against in the league, surrendering an average of 3.25 goals against a night and one of the worst PK units in the league killing 74.5% of the power plays they have faced. The Flames did get some good news this week as Mike Cammalleri returned to the line-up and Sven Baertshi seems to be improving. The Flames have an uphill battle going forward. They have a decent core but will need to add some talent in the upcoming years through the draft. Right now the best thing that the Flames can do is trade away some of their top end talent and build through the draft.

Columbus Blue Jackets $15 (-85)

Scott Howson finally got axed, but that doesn't necessarily make things any easier for the Jackets. Recently acquired Brandon Dubinsky is on the IR, giving youngster Cam Altkinson a chance to shine. Artem Anisimov was released from the hospital two days ago after suffering a scary hit during the Red Wings game Thursday night. The Columbus blueline is also a mess with injuries to many of their starting defensemen. The present maybe grim, but the future looks brighter for the Jackets. They have a decent prospect pool and will be a big player come draft time. The rebuilding is just beginning in Columbus.

Roman Josi: Nashville's Swiss Army Knife

20130218_mjm_aq2_038

Roman Josi stepped into this season with great expectations. Many who watched the smooth-skating defenseman in Milwaukee thought he looked ahead of current Predator blueliner Shea Weber and public enemy number one Ryan Suter when they were his age. Lane Lambert and even bench boss Barry Trotz gushed about the Swiss defensemen before his arrival in Music City USA and have since fallen in love with Josi's style of play. While Josi may not be a household name yet, the 6'2 sophomore is doing all the right things and playing a detail oriented game that coaches like to see.

There were a few concerns going into the season about Josi's ability to handle Suter's workload, but Josi seems to have hardly missed a beat on the top pairing with Weber. Josi has seen a dramatic increase in his power play minutes and has seen a bit of time on the PK as well. Perhaps the most telling statistic, however, his Josi's average time on ice compared to some of the current and former Predator greats in their sophomore years.

Take a look:

  • Roman Josi 22:14
  • Shea Weber 19:29 07-08 (excluding 28 game stint his rookie season)
  • Ryan Suter 20:09 06-07
  • Dan Hamhuis 22:33 05-06
  • Kevin Klein 19:55 09-10 (excluding plethora of being called up and down)
  • Kimmo Timonen 21:05
  • Jonathon Blum 17:56
  • Marek Zidlicky 20:03

Only Dan Hamuis had more average ice time in his sophomore year. That is pretty good company.

Nashville Predators @ Detroit Red Wings: Rematch in Motown

For the second time this week, the Predators tangle with their greatest rival, this time in Detroit. Can they bounce back from a disappointing effort Friday night against Vancouver?

You know, if you took the team names away from the top of this table, there's no way you'd convince me that Detroit is the team on the right.

Detroit Red Wings

Since these two teams last met on Tuesday, the Red Wings lost on home ice to Columbus, 3-2. Worse yet for Detroit fans, this involved coughing up a 2-0 lead on their way to defeat. There's a whiff of panic on the air in Motown these days:

This loss is on everyone. It's on the coaching staff for continuing to put Cleary and Abdelkader with the best player on the team. It's on Valtteri Filppula for apparently being a fluke last year. It's on Damien Brunner for not maintaining control of the puck with less than a minute left. It's on the defense for not covering a man wide open in front of the net. It's on Jimmy Howard for biting so hard on the pass that led to the winning goal.

This team is Pavel Datsyuk, Henrik Zetterberg, and a bunch of 'who-knows-what'. The power play sucks, the penalty kill sucks, their bottom 6 can't score, their defense is porous, and their goalie can't make the big stops.

--- Winging It In Motown

I do pity Howard a little bit here, as goalies can get caught looking foolish when they lose confidence in their defense and start gambling more.

This could be the worst Red Wings team since the days when Per Djoos (one of the greatest hockey names ever) patrolled the blueline in Detroit, and the adjustment of expectations will be a painful process in the post-Lidstrom era.

Nashville Predators

Well, so much for the offense getting back in gear, eh? Last night's shutout was certainly disappointing, and heading into Detroit on the tail end of a back-to-back set doesn't generally bode well, but so far the Predators are defying expectations there. This is the fourth set of back-to-back games for Nashville, and they've put up a 0-2-2 record in the front half of those sets, with a 2-1-0 record on the back half.

After opting to dress Hal Gill over Jonathon Blum last night, it will be interesting to see if that decision holds tonight as well. Detroit has been less than stellar on the power play, perhaps leading one to think that Gill might not be as much of a necessity, but the veteran might come in handy against the skilled forwards the Red Wings still boast up front.

The other major call, of course, is whether to go with Pekka Rinne on back to back nights, or give Chris Mason a chance to erase the memory of that Presidents Day stinker at Colorado.

Sorry for the abbreviated preview this morning, but I'm out of town doing this remotely... and it's time to have some coffee & donuts.

Remember, this is a relatively early start (6:00 p.m.) tonight, so check back for the Game Thread at 5:30!
