What Was the Biggest Nashville Predators Story of 2012?

Monday, December 31, 2012

20120420_ajw_sq9_135

Presented in no particular order, here are a few of the major news stories regarding the Nashville Predators from 2012. Vote in the poll below, and make your case in the comments as to why one of these was the Greatest...

  • Radulov's Return - Nashville's trade deadline acquisitions were nice, but the return of Alexander Radulov to the Predators gave fans reason to believe that the team had the elite-level offensive difference-maker who could help lead them deep into the playoffs. Of course, we all know how that story turned sour during the Phoenix series - a late night out with Andrei Kostitsyn led to being benched for Games 3 & 4 of that series, with the Preds then eliminated in Game Five. It looks we've seen the last of Rads in Predators Gold, but that last fling was quite a wild ride, wasn't it?
  • Suter & Tootoo Leave as Free Agents - The question of how the Big 3 could be retained long-term hung over Nashville for the last year or more, and once Pekka Rinne signed up for a 7-year contract extension, the reluctance of Ryan Suter & Shea Weber to do the same raised doubts among many fans. Sure enough, Suter left for big bucks and familiar territory in Minnesota, and in addition, Jordin Tootoo, one of the most popular figures in team history, signed with hated rival Detroit after a tumultuous final year with the Preds.
  • Shea Weber Offer Sheet Matched - It was as bold a ploy as has ever been attempted in the history of NHL offer sheets. 14 years, $110 million of heavily front-loaded money was put on the table by the Philadelphia Flyers, and Weber's agents implied in public that their client would prefer to play for the high-spending Eastern Conference contender. The Predators had the option to match the offer and retain their captain, which they did. It will be interesting, however, to see how the next CBA deals with such outlandish contracts, and how that will impact the Preds under the salary cap.
  • Preds Beat Detroit - Winning a playoff series had been done in 2011, but defeating the Red Wings in the first round of 2012 was a milestone achievement for a franchise which has long looked up at Detroit in the standings. The Preds have finally beaten the Central Division bully, just in time for a new power in St. Louis to arise.
  • Predators in Las Vegas - Once again, David Poile, Shea Weber & Pekka Rinne were finalists for the award recognizing the best in their profession (GM, defenseman & goaltender) but came up short. Mike Fisher brought home the NHL Foundation Player Award, however, recognizing his charitable endeavors.

I could go on and on, but those seem to be the five major contenders for the Biggest Nashville Predators Story of 2012? Which gets your vote?

I also want to take this occasion to thank all of you for your support during the year gone by. Until this stupid lockout came along, it was a damned good year for OTF. Our community kept growing, we were named Best Sports Blog in Nashville, and stretched in a few different directions, by welcoming in new writers and launching our YouTube channel. Here's to hoping that we can all get back to Game Threads and goofiness again real soon.

Until then? Well, there are other sports stories in Nashville to talk about...

Bring On The Funny

If you're a regular reader here, then you're familiar with the comedic stylings of Down Goes Brown, the hockey humor blog that lives up to all the hype. Being funny on a regular basis is damnedly hard stuff, but somehow DGB manages to do it. Now, you can order The Best of Down Goes Brown: Greatest Hits and Brand New Classics-to-Be from Hockey's Most Hilarious Blog via Amazon, and support a hockey blogger who provides genuinely unique, valuable content for us grateful readers.

Get The Book on Bettman

The publishers of John Gatehouse's new biography The Instigator: How Gary Bettman Remade the Game and Changed the NHL Forever were kind enough to send me a review copy, and even the most bitter members of the "Fire Bettman!" movement would be well served reading this book.

It portrays the commissioner as singluarly focused on fighting and winning battles on behalf of NHL owners. Whether we're watching him squeeze extra millions out of nervous TV executives or endure the taunts of fans while handing out the Stanley Cup each spring, Bettman isn't shy about taking a few shots in order to get the job done. Whether you hate him, or hate him a lot, you'd be best served learning more about the most powerful figure in the sport.

Put a Spring in Their Step

Just a week after Christmas comes New Year's, with all those resolutions about getting into shape (I know I sure need to make one). A very cool way to get those good intentions put into motion is with Reebok ZigTech training shoes with the color & logo of your favorite NHL team. These proved very popular when I posted about them over at Hockey Gear HQ last year, but they went out of stock for most of 2012. Now, they're back with the new ZigLite training shoe, and there are also sandals available.

The Nashville Predators shoes, for example, do look pretty sweet.

Hopefully those three ideas can help you round out your 2012 holiday shopping, and cheer that hockey fan in your life up a bit. We know that the NHL players and owners certainly aren't going to do the job...

Note: The links above are affiliate links - if you click through them and purchase something at those sites, I'll receive a small commission from the retailer for sending you to them. Thanks for your support of OTF throughout 2012, and Happy Holidays!

The City of Nashville just renegotiated the Predators' arena lease earlier this year. Did they not have the common sense to consider the possibility of a lockout, and how that might affect the team's ability to deliver on its economic promise? NHL CBA Talks: Long Negotiating Session Leads to #NHLPodium Mania

Thursday, December 6, 2012

157714830

(SB Nation) -- The NHL and NHLPA met for about nine hours on Tuesday, and Wednesday, they repeated the feat, meeting for another nine hours and driving the entire hockey world mad by not releasing a single detail.

So after hours upon hours of staring at a podium, it was at least a bit of relief when NHL deputy commissioner Bill Daly used that podium and lectern to give a brief statement, even if that statement came well after 1 a.m. ET.

"We had good candid, dialogue," Daly said. "A lot of issues. There continue to be some critical open issues between the two parties and we understand the union should be getting back to us [Thursday] on some of those issues."

From the players side, only Jets defenseman Ron Hainsey spoke.

As was the case after Tuesday's marathon bargaining session, the silence seems to be a good thing. Earlier in this work stoppage, both sides would leak details of meetings to the media while those meetings were still in progress, and when they stepped to the microphone afterwards, they would give history lessons and spout rhetoric in frustrating fashion.

But the tone has changed. In the last 48 hours, both sides have indicated "respect for the process," as Gary Bettman put it earlier Wednesday, and are not bothering to play the PR war. An ESPN.com report claimed earlier in the evening that negotiations were "tense," but instead of the sides breaking away from the table in a cloud of anger, they seem to be committed to hammering out the details and getting a deal done.

It might be frustrating that we don't have the specifics of negotiations, but that simple fact also means that we're likely nearing that light at the end of the tunnel.

The following press release was found at The Futon Critic:

The stars aligned in Nashville last night for a celebrity-filled evening honoring the 2012 CMT ARTISTS OF THE YEAR with appearances or performances by some of the biggest names in entertainment and sports, including Jason Aldean, Lady Antebellum, Luke Bryan, Rodney Carrington, baseball great Roger Clemens, Kenny Chesney, Eric Church, Sheryl Crow, Eli Young Band, "Late Late Show" host Craig Ferguson, Nashville Predators' Mike Fisher, Academy Award(R) winning actor Morgan Freeman, Rock and Roll Hall of Fame member Sammy Hagar, Merle Haggard, Hunter Hayes, Metallica's James Hetfield, Atlanta Braves' Chipper Jones, Toby Keith, Kid Rock, Miranda Lambert, rapper Ludacris, Kacey Musgraves, "Duck Dynasty" star Willie Robertson, Kenny Rogers, Thompson Square, Grammy Award(R) winning record producer and OneRepublic frontman Ryan Tedder, Carrie Underwood and Chris Young. Country super group Rascal Flatts and "Nashville" actress Hayden Panettiere hosted the event that honors the top country acts of 2012 when it premieres on Saturday, December 8 at 10:00 p.m., ET/PT on CMT.

An Open Letter to Nashville Predators Governor Joel Dobberpuhl

143702898

I'm writing you today to advise that you speak up, firmly and passionately, in support of striking a deal with the NHLPA and getting back to work immediately.

Lockout Costs Are Growing Daily

Every day this lockout drags on, teams like the Predators are losing customers. Just yesterday, one of your most visible fans, Codey Holland of Section 303, publicly declared that he was no longer a season ticket holder. Codey has led chants from atop the team's quasi-official superfan section for years, has been featured in a radio ad for one of your key sponsors (pitching other Preds fans on banking services with a team tie-in), and is an active supporter of the team on social networks like Twitter & Facebook.

When you lose a ticket holder like that (or Patten Fuqua of Puckscene.com, who also says he's taken a refund) you're losing the grassroots of your fan base. Yes, the hard-working marketing staff within the Predators organization can probably win many of those folks back, but at what cost? Instead of building on the momentum from the last few seasons, you can look forward to several months of discounts, comped tickets, and phone calls to former customers trying to get them back into Bridgestone Arena. Even with all that effort, it's doubtful that many of these fans will get back to their previous level of financial commitment to the team.

It will be like 2007-2008 all over again, when the franchise's history in Music City hung in the balance. The competition for the local sports-entertainment dollar is only going to get tougher, however. In case you haven't noticed, there's a college football team on the rise just a few blocks down Broadway, with aspirations of stepping up to a higher level in the years ahead.

The Predators just struck a new arena lease deal with the city of Nashville based on the premise that the team is an economic engine for the downtown area, and right now that engine is stalled because the owners & players can't agree on how to proceed. What kind of long-term damage is being done to the team's credibility as a leader in the local business community by this completely unnecessary lockout?

Keep Your Eyes On The Prize

If, during the Board of Governors meeting, an old hand like Boston's Jeremy Jacobs tells a relative newcomer like yourself to wait your turn and let the old guard handle things, that's where you need to take a stand. These aren't the days of the Original Six, when a cozy group of owners could has things out over brandy & cigars.

The modern NHL is a $3.3 billion business, which could be much bigger if it got its collective act together. Bold ideas are needed to make gains on leagues like the NBA, NFL, or Major League Baseball, and that opportunity is being squandered right now.

The NHL should be focused on the big picture - getting an expansion team into Toronto to further tap into an under-served hockey market, getting the Phoenix Coyotes off the league's books ASAP, and maximizing the opportunity for upcoming paydays, like the Canadian broadcast rights agreements which are expiring soon.

It's time to stop being penny-wise and pound-foolish. Overall league revenues have been growing steadily for years now, but the current course of action jeopardizes all that hard work. Get the players away from the negotiating table and back on the ice, where they belong.

Sincerely,

Dirk Hoag

NHL CBA Talks: Mediation Fails After 2 Days

Friday, November 30, 2012

151963604

(SB Nation News) -- The first attempt at the NHL and NHL Players' Association to find common ground with the held of mediation has come and gone within a period of two days. After each side met separately with the Federal Mediation and Conciliation Service on Wednesday, Thursday's meeting between both sides and the FMCS resulted in closed negotiations, according to ESPN's Pierre LeBrun.

LeBrun added that no more meetings were planned between the two sides, and a statement released by NHL deputy commissioner Bill Daly echoed that stance:

"After spending several hours with both sides over two days, the presiding mediators concluded that the parties remained far apart, and that no progress toward a resolution could be made through further mediation at this point in time. We are disappointed that the mediation process was not successful."

LeBrun reports that after the negotiations closed on Thursday, the NHL opened the possibility of the league owners and players meeting without any league officials present.

According to ESPN, the mediation didn't help with the lingering issue of the NHL and union being far apart in negotiations for a new collective bargaining agreement. Sources told ESPN that the meetings were held in Woodbridge, N.J.

The FMCS, who reached out to both sides to set up the meetings, was also involved in the NBA and NFL lockouts in 2011, though its presence did little to help resolve those situations.

NHL CBA Talks: Federal Mediators Called In

Tuesday, November 27, 2012

151963375

(SB Nation News) -- Just a week after league deputy commissioner Bill Daly said that mediation was not the preferred course of action to solve the ongoing 2012 NHL lockout, federal mediators in the United States have announced that they're getting involved.

George Cohen, the director of the Federal Mediation and Conciliation Service, released a statement on Monday afternoon. Cohen and his agency played a role in both the NFL and NBA lockouts of a year ago.

"I have had separate, informal discussions with the key representatives of the National Hockey League and the National Hockey League Players' Association during the course of their negotiations for a successor collective bargaining agreement," Cohen said. "At the invitation of the FMCS, and with the agreement of both parties, the ongoing negotiations will now be conducted under our auspices. I have assigned Deputy Director Scot L. Beckenbaugh, Director of Mediation Services John Sweeney, and Commissioner Guy Serota to serve as the mediators."

"Due to the extreme sensitivity of these negotiations and consistent with the FMCS's long-standing practice, the Agency will refrain from any public comment concerning the future schedule and/or the status of the negotiations until further notice."

Mediation from the FMCS is always voluntary and both sides have agreed to have Cohen and his team step forward in trying to solve the work stoppage. The FMCS cannot force a resolution but according to its website, it can "help keep talks moving, focused an on track," it can help "generate new options" for the two sides and "help establish ground rules and realistic expectations."

The NHL and NHLPA spoke on Monday, according to reports, and plan on involving the mediator in formal talks later this week.

NHL Cancels 2013 All-Star Game, Two More Weeks of Schedule

Saturday, November 24, 2012

151963617

(SB Nation News) -- The NHL officially announced the cancelation of the 2013 All-Star Game on Friday afternoon, in addition to all regular season games through Dec. 14. The cancelations are due to the ongoing collective bargaining negotiations between the NHL and NHL Players Association.

The All-Star Game was scheduled to be held at Nationwide Arena in Columbus, Ohio on Jan. 27, 2013. In addition to the game, the league will also be canceling the weekend's worth of events, including the annual skills competition and player draft. This was going to be the first time that the Columbus Blue Jackets franchise has ever hosted the event.

In the official announcement, NHL deputy commissioner Bill Daley stated that the league will work to return the All-Star Game to Columbus as quickly as possible.

With Friday's announcement, the NHL has now canceled 423 regular season games including the 2013 Winter Classic, which was going to be played between the Detroit Red Wings and Toronto Maple Leafs at Michigan Stadium.

As of Friday afternoon, the NHL insists a significant gap still remains between the owners and players union on the terms of a new collective bargaining agreement.
